Re: New TSB 009-006-15

Yeah I wonder why I am having this issue and many, many others aren't (yet). My Jeep doesn't have the tow package (why even offer the diesel without it?) and I don't drive long distances too often. So perhaps I am not working the engine hard enough to keep the build up from happening. But the dealer put the wrong oil in the first two oil changes as well which I can't rule out as part of the issue either.

But since I am past the Lemon Law statute of limitations, Chrysler doesn't seem to really care about making amends or helping me out. God only knows what else is going to happen with it as it ages. That's why I'm turning it in when the lease is up in 16 months. Wish it worked better and that I had a better experience. On paper, it should be an awesome product. But I didnt drop $45k+ on a vehicle for it to be in for repairs every 6 weeks and out of commission for over a month and a half. Or deal with the incompetence at FCA headquarters.

Makes me think about trading it in for something else...

Airbull, I just got my GC today after 3 weeks getting the new heads installed. The FP number is 68292424-AA -Head Engi 09003004. So far after about 20 mi running fine. I will be taking it on a about a 1200 mi trip in a week so hopefully no fishbites or MIL lights to report later.

Re: New TSB 009-006-15

I had very little issues until 26k but I normally towed until the last year or so when had to move cross country had to stop racing so didn't have a reason to tow this past year (however in the next month or so I will start towing frequently again as have a racecar being finished soon).

It also may have something to do with short driving stints with lots of city driving with congestion and idling long periods of time. I think it has to do with if you can't work the engine hard it cakes up with soot on sensors and internal engine parts causing all these problems.

Re: New TSB 009-006-15

Doing some research a while back, I read many reports that using additives (Cetane boosters and the like) can reduce soot levels. So I've been using Power Services Diesel Kleen + Cetane booster in mine and at 23k no "fishbites".

Given the issues with our "Clean diesels!", I'll continue to use it. We don't use our JGC for much local use, mainly towing our trailer and longer distance use with a minimum of 15 miles a our shortest journey.

Re: New TSB 009-006-15

Agreed on the diesel keel at every fill up. I notice a real difference in the power and smoothness of the engine with that stuff flowing through the tank. Even after the repair was done, I did one tank with and one without and it was still noticeable. I think if I had used this from the beginning, it may have helped. But then again I've also had the wrong oil used by the dealer twice and don't do any towing. I think towing gets the engine hotter and prevents this issue more than anything.

Probably right in that you don't work the engine hard enough to get the temps hot for extended periods. As well, I would say fuel quality in general may be an issue. North American diesel cetane is not as high as in Europe, effectively lowering the compression ratio that can be run on diesels.
I run a large fleet of Ford 6.0L diesels, Sprinter 3.0L and new Ford Transit 3.2L diesels. Ford had a TSB for their 6.0L requesting cetane boost be added to fuel for the 6.0. And we all know what a dog that engine was/is when stock.
If it were my JGC diesel, I would run Shell diesel and quality cetane boosting additive and run it hard once a week.

Re: New TSB 009-006-15

Just got back from a 1100+ mile drive with the new heads and so far no issues. Hopefully, the local stop and go driving to follow will not change anything. I haven't tried any of the additives and may try next fill-up but would this effect warranty?

Read somewhere else that Shell diesel is better? Higher cetane or?

Yes.

This PIT group is setup specifically to do SAE standards industry testing of fuel, additives, aerodynamics, etc. I have seen them present at conferences and spoken with their engineers. Sharp group with minimal b/s. I personally know a mechanic hired by them, from our mechanic pool. He is top notch - deep knowledge in auto systems.

PIT testing finds Shell Diesel Extra provides fuel savings - Truck News

Chevron Premium Diesel is available in the US, though. They stated 8% better MPG which is exactly what I got, hand calculated. Cetane boosters and lubricity additives.
