Noob inquiries

Hey all, just picked up a 2016 GC Limited Eco Diesel 4x4. I traded in an old Volkswagen rabbit and am leasing the vehicle. I love Jeeps, it's my first diesel and my first Jeep. Love the car so far, wish it was more boxy like the Cherokees of old but anyway...

I wanted to lease it since I don't know if I want to keep it or not. Everyone is telling me to stop holding onto cars, new ones are too annoying to maintain etc. I live in NYC (Staten Island to be exact) I drive on the highway to work everyday and I plan on bringing the car out on trips to burn through the DEF stuff.

Is this a car that you all suggest I keep or bring it back after the lease and see what Jeep has next?

My next question with this whole DEF nonsense, should I be worried since I am not driving the car on interstates every week?

Will it shut down on me and leave me stranded? I got diesel for the longevity and the mileage.

If I do keep the car any mods that will help with that DEF stuff? It's a lease so I know I am limited in regards to mods for now. I plan on going to dealer for oil changes since everyone tells me most mechanics are clueless on diesels, and the DEF fluid I saw Autozone sells Peak DEF...not sure if I should just do it myself.

Sorry for the long rant! Thanks all!

Re: Noob inquiries

Welcome.

As long as your trips are not all stop and go or under 5 miles, you should be fine.

Your item of concern with city driving is the DPF (diesel particulate filter), not DEF (diesel exhaust fluid). Two different systems, but each an emissions component.

If your driving includes at least one 20 mile trip at 45MPH or better every 150 miles or so, you should be fine. Less than that and you'll have to obey the dash display when it tells you to continue driving at highway speeds to complete a regeneration.

See how it works for your situation and buy it if it fits for your use.

Re: Noob inquiries

My first diesel and Jeep too. Had mine for about 12k miles now. The first 6 months it was 3 miles to and from work at 30-45mph. Doing that exclusively, I would get the "drive at highway speed" message every 2 weeks or so. Now that my daily drive is ~20 miles each way and half at 45mph and half at 70-80mph I never get a regen message.

Been using Peak blue def (2 jugs sofar) and works fine. I just add a 2.5 gal jug when it tells me the def is low. Mopar says def lasts a year, but Peak says 2 years, depending on temperature,

I think these motors like to be run hot. And I don't think I would buy a diesel is my commute was a short distance,

Re: Noob inquiries

Given that you've already leased it's best to just turn it back in rather than try to buy it at the end as that is rarely a good financial move. Lease payments can't keep up with depreciation.

The DEF fluid does have a shelf life that is decreased in warmer temperatures so in theory it could go bad in the tank, but if you're driving it everyday I doubt this would be an issue. I'm sure you've researched but you can get DEF at any auto store for much less than the dealer; packaged stuff is all the same.

Honestly the oil changes on the diesel are not anything special, so any qualified tech can do the fluid change for you, doesn't have to be the dealer but that's up to you and your wallet.
