Number of "hard" gears in 8-speed GC diesel

I have a 2016 GC Diesel and am curious about the number of actual gears versus those that use the torque converter as a "gear". No doubt I need some corrections in my terminology, so this is what I am asking:

In our Suburu there appears to be three gears in the transmission -- that is three gears where the engine and wheels are locked together, and in two of those gears, the lock is taken off of the torque converter which gives the feeling there are 5 gears.

How is the GC's transmission/torque converter configured as it goes through the 8 gears?

With appreciation...

Todd

I know in my 5speed gc there are 3 sets of planetaries for 6 ratios. Each planetary supports 2 ratios. It's programmed to run only 5 ratios.

It stands to reason the 845/8hp is setup similarly as mine.

The GC Diesel uses the 8HP70 and TC lock-up is available in all 8 gears

Info here:
