Oil Cap Broken Tabs

Up north for the holidays and tried to remove my oil cap to add a touch of oil. Had to use pliers to get the cap off. I noticed 1 tab when I thought there were two. Reinstalling the cap the 2nd tab breaks off. Extremely hard to get the cap off in the first place.
No one has a spare cap in the area so I will be driving home with a cap that is a friction fit nice huh.

Plastic POS. For all the nice features this one is a bad design. It should be metal because when cold to check the oil you should not need to warm the engine up to get an oil fill cap off. I loved my Ford Super Duty but our VM not so much for this application.

Fingers crossed I don't pop the cap off on the 800 mile trip home...

I talked to the parts dept in town and the parts guy told me I should go see the service dept when I get back home and see what they can do. I never had an issue with any kind of cap before.
The other nice part is that there are now two tabs in the engine someplace which are around 8mm x 8mm.

Re: Oil Cap Broken Tabs

Good luck with the drive home and dealer fix.

Where did the broken tabs go?

Re: Oil Cap Broken Tabs

Into the engine someplace most likely sitting on top of the head. I am not pleased at all but these are plastic and will yield to metal. My only concern is them blocking a return oil drain hole.
When home will look but since I noticed only one tab left when I pulled the cap and the 2nd one broke off when putting it on I have little confidence of finding them...

Re: Oil Cap Broken Tabs

Well the dealership had to reorder the part since they ordered an oil filter cap not an oil filler cap. Easy mistake to make. Interesting the service dept got the part and it was not just the cap but a plastic assembly that 1/4 turns on to the valve cover. The service could not get that assembly off and I told him that the cap is all I need. He worked to get the cap off and finally did. The cap he removed off the assembly took great effort to remove. Once removed the new cap went on easily because the engine was hot. Beware doing this in cold weather might result in the situation I just had.
End of this thread for me...

Re: Oil Cap Broken Tabs

BTTT Anyone else notice how hard the oil cap is to remove on this engine? I had a hard time removing and getting cap back on....is there a trick to this? Never had a cap that is so finicky

Re: Oil Cap Broken Tabs

The cap is so tight you can't tell when the taps are reached or not. I have taken the cover off and have been able to control the turning that way. I do plan to mark the properly installed location with some paint. What a PITA for such a simple easy to use (supposedly) cap. By the way the new assembly was exactly like the old one. So tight and hard to turn that you still can't tell when it hits the tabs...

Re: Oil Cap Broken Tabs

I had a hard time getting mine off too. I had it twisted so the tabs were unlocked and I was pulling on it and when it left loose it went flying...bounced off the underside of the hood and fell down below the fan blade. I had to reach up from underneath to get it out. I have to agree it was more difficult than usual to get it to release...it was like on a serious vacuum. I think the O-ring needs lubed up and that would help it go on and off easier I believe.

Re: Oil Cap Broken Tabs

Is this a 2014 issue? I've not noticed this on my 2015, but I've only opened it for oil changes after warmed up.
