Re: oil catch can

Another Burger Catch Can success. I have only put 10 miles on it, but they were varied miles. Hard acceleration, hard stops, hard turns and of course easy. No codes yet. Will continue to monitor and report back.

Thank you kag49601!

Haven't had an oil change yet. I'd probably remove the can for a change though. I'm going to check it soon at the 5k mark to see how much oil is in there and if I need to dump it every 5k or every 10k. I'll post photos of the 5k collection.

What I meant to ask how easy it is to access the engine oil filter with the new intake. The stock air intake hose sits right on top of the oil filter. I hate the stock intake, and the cheap filter seals, and I'm considering buying an intake like you have

I have 4600 miles. Haven't even looked at the oil filter yet lol.

oil catch can

Ok, after 5k miles I pulled the Berger catch can out and checked the oil level, I'd estimate between 1/8 and 1/4 full. A couple tablespoons for sure. I think for my tune and driving style I can go 10k before draining it. Keep in mind how far down the "strainer" from the top screws down into the bottom. I'm glad to keep this crap out of my intake system.

I need to get a 1/8npt drain valve for the bottom so I can leave it in place while draining.

Pics are hard to tell on the level since everything is black but hopefully you can make out the level:

Nice. Did you happen to check how clean the PCV lines were downstream of the catch can?

I'm trying to get a gauge of how effective it is vs the amount that is blowing past without getting captured by the catch can.

I've had my can on for about a year now, oil quantity caught seems similar to what you guys are saying. The line downstream of the can is almost dry- just a slight oily film on the tube walls, whereas upstream of the can they're very wet with oil.
Combine the oil that's been caught, with the EGR in the turbo and manifold manifold and you can see why the catch can is such a good idea.
Whilst it doesn't catch absolutely everything, I reckon it's probably catching perhaps well over 90% of the oil.

Cheers

Re: oil catch can

The inlet hose had oil on the edge of it and the outlet hose was dry. I didn't look inside them per se, but I got oil on my hands from handling one and not the other (real scientific, I know).

Re: oil catch can

Slightly off topic, but I also tried putting a restrictor on the EGR.

Initially I added a plate with just a small 3/16" (I think from memory) hole drilled in it- got codes after a while saying low EGR flow.

I cleared the codes,
Then added another hole about 1/8" from memory, the idea being to reduce flow as much as possible without setting off codes, drilling more holes till no messages appear.
So far so good, lots of miles incl towing, two small holes in the plate would likely significantly reduce flow compared to wide open, (no restrictor plate) and no codes happening after many miles. Of course I'd like to shut EGR off completely, but would need to do software re flash fiddles for that, which I don't want to do during warranty.

After warranty will likely be a different matter.....
The amount of black crud from the EGR has to be seen to be believed, not pretty in the inlet. It would certainly be worse without the catch can.

I wish you took pics. That's a great reason to do as you did, or get a ECU remap disabling the EGR.

Re: oil catch can

Just did mine, similar to post #132, with a little twist. The supplied bracket can be attached in such a way that it can be sandwiched between the hood seal and the seal retainer. I had to use my oscillating tool to make a little room, but now it fits perfectly.
