Oil Life Re-Set

Just had the oil and filter replaced today at 2500 miles. I like to change early especially on a new engine but when they went to reset the oil life setting it would not reset. The service guy said that because the oil life still registered 29% I would have to wait until it got nearer to zero before it would reset. Anyone know if this is true or BS?
BTW they used the Pennzoil full synthetic and charged $145 including labor and filter which seemed reasonable. Also did a software update.

Re: Oil Life Re-Set

It's BS......I have about 1600 miles on mine and just did my first oil change on it last weekend and I had no issue resetting it, you should be able to reset it at any point in time. Just give it a try yourself, it took me 2 tries to get it to work.

Pretty expensive oil change.....that's why I prefer to do it myself. Mobil 1 oil and K&N oil filter and it was less than 60 bucks, but it is kind of a messy thing to do at home but if you enjoy working on your own car it's a good feeling to do it yourself and you save 90 bucks or so in the process, and know it's done correctly and the right oil was used.

Thanks for that - is the reset procedure pumping the gas pedal three or four times?

It is, so you turn the ignition to "on" without starting the car, press the gas pedal three times all the way to the floor within 10 seconds and then turn it off. Turn the car back on and it should be reset.

Re: Oil Life Re-Set

Tried it half a dozen times. Now it says 40,360 miles since last reset. Car is only 2500 miles old, or at least it damn well better be!!

Re: Oil Life Re-Set

I had trouble with mine on the first change. The service dept couldn't figure it out so I found the instructions. It reset the miles but oil life stayed at 7%. I drove it 8k until suddenly the 7% went to 6%. I had my second change and the service guys had figured out the reset and it worked fine....0 miles, 100%. Go figure. BTW...no TSBs applied on mine...yet.

Mine does that as well. Only when the ACC is on. When its running it shows the right mileage.

Do you know how they ended up getting it to reset properly?

I do not. I assume that the documented method should be repeated if it doesn't work initially.

Re: Oil Life Re-Set

The documented method works but is very finicky. It's not 3 or 4 times of the accelerator, it's 3 times only. It took me at least 6 if not 8 or 10 tries to get it. It's all about the timing and speed with which the accelerator is pressed. I think when it worked for me I had utilized nearly the entire 10 seconds for the 3 presses of the gas pedal. If you push the pedal slowly and take as long as possible but not exceeding the 10 second limit it should work, at least that is how it seems to have went for me.3.

Oh yeah, that garbage about it needing to be closer to 0% for it to reset is total crap. I get that service departments may not know the details about the newest technology and that it takes time for them to get people up to speed. I work in a service oriented business and learned a long time ago that most people respect "I don't know, but I'm going to find out for you sir." more than a line of nonsense recently pulled from the nether regions.

Re: Oil Life Re-Set

I just changed mine at 1000 miles. Reset worked perfectly the first time. How'd I do it? Turned ignition to Run (button two times, no brakes) pumped the accelerator fully FIVE times (read somewhere on here that worked for someone else) and turned her off. Turned back on and it was reset to zero.

Re: Oil Life Re-Set

wtf. 3 presses, 5 presses, maybe the engineers, or manual writers, don't even know what works and what doesn't. Good to know, I stand corrected.
