oil smell on shutdown

My wife told me the past few days she has smelled a faint oil smell in the cab after shutdown. The oil level is still full and no leaks. Could she be smelling def in the exhaust ?? I own other diesels just none with def systems or ones that do not smoke

Re: oil smell on shutdown

We don't have the DEF system in Australia, but I occasionally smell it too...
Don't know why though...

It could be just that you're smelling the new car oil smell burnoff. Some people complain of a slight burning smell after they buy their new car but its not inside the cabin.

I would hope after 2 weeks and 600 miles it would have been burnt off by now but I will give it some time.

My dealer told me that the engine needs to heat up and stay that way for about awhile to burn everything off. I'm at 400 miles and have taken a few 1-2 hour trips at 75-80 mph and the smell is mostly gone. If I take a long trip, I smell it a little but not on short trips.

Re: oil smell on shutdown

Noticed the same on mine from approx. 1500km or 900miles, I ended up getting underneath and put my finger on the oil drain plug, I found oil, having current discussions with my dealer as this has turned out to be a major problem (engine oil leak). It is however not as some dealers have said a normal running in smell, you should have no oil smell at all from the word GO.

Re: oil smell on shutdown

I have 1500 miles and today smelled something like oil after perking in the garage. Looks like I will need to crawl under to take a look.

Ours had an oil leak from 300km. Went back to the dealer 4 times before it was fixed. The upper sump gasket was the apparent culprit.

Thanks for the info my dealer said they had never heard of the problem, my sump was actually warped ( back left hand corner ) new sump and gaskets etc fitted, will see how it goes.

Re: oil smell on shutdown

she said today that she has not smelled the oil smell lately so hopefully it was just some exhaust or something like that.
