Re: Oil test?

[QUOTE=Roadkill;1289627]Yes, but I want to expand on that point: I continue to get the Blackstone analysis with every oil change, but I no longer pay the extra fee for TBN because every single published Blackstone result we've seen on this forum indicates that there is plenty of TBN left--even at 10,000 miles--on both the Mobil1 ESP & Pennzoil (Ultra/Platinum) Euro L. If I were to try a new MS-11106 spec oil I'd probably get the TBN again for a few changes, but for now I'm satisfied using Mobil1 ESP.

Fully agree with your approach. Once you have established a trend under your normal usage there is no point paying for the same data. I am even considering only doing an analysis every third change now that the wear metals have settled down.

I was trying to get across in a subtle way that a lot of people do not really understand all the functions of oil and when and why it needs changing.
How many know what TBN stands for and what it does?

Good point, tasjeep.

Here's an explanation of TBN for those who are unfamiliar:
Do I Need a TBN?

Blackstone is a used oil analysis company, not a web developer shop... that link will work fine on a desktop browser (or if you select "Request Desktop Site" in your mobile browser). Otherwise, their misconfigured web server will send your mobile browser to the main page of their mobile site.

Re: Oil test?

I've sent my share of dollars to Blackstone over the years for tests on race engines and such and I send my daily driver vehicle samples in every 3rd or 4th oil change. I agree that doing so on a modern engine that sees "normal" use every change is a waste, especially when results are normal from the previous test. Blackstone test kits are free. Get on the website and request some, send in your sample at least once for piece of mind. My ecodiesel gets oil changes every 7,500mi, but I do tow with it. 10k under normal daily duties is perfect!

Re: Oil test?

As in Pwrdbym, we also tow. In our case, a Lance 1685 travel trailer which, ready for the road, weighs in around 4600lbs. I did a Blackstone at the 2nd Oil change with 8500 miles on the oil. It came back pretty much normal with a good TBN and could easily have gone to the stock 10k.

And I use Pennzoil Ultra Euro L in ours.
