Re: Possible causes for oil leak down front of engine?

We picked up the jeep and the paper work was not ready. Seems odd, but whatever. They are suppose to mail me the paperwork, so when I receive it, I will post the service bulletin. Unless he is full of hot air, which is a possibility.

Re: Possible causes for oil leak down front of engine?

So I took mine in to have the oil leak fixed on July 22. They confirmed that it is indeed leaking out of the timing case, driver's side. Apparently to fix this they have to remove the injector rails and common rail injector fuel lines. Those are one time use items of course. So they've got $1500 of parts and such on order to fix the leak. Problem is the injector lines are on backorder with Chrysler, and no estimated shipping date. Meanwhile the thing is leaking like crazy now. Entire bottom half of engine, wire harness, accessories, all covered in oil. Ho hum ho hum. Oh well.

Also noticed that my air dam was missing. Dealer tech took it off and never put it back on. Hopefully he still has it in a month or year or whenever my parts come in and the finish the repair

Change the oil when done. I did, and sent the sample to Blackstone. I mean, not only did I pull off 9 quarts of "whatever" oil when I drained the oil (knowing I only had filled with 8 quarts), but also the UOA revealed high silicates.

Blackstone suggested a follow on oil change at 6 to 8,000 *kilometers*.

Absolutely. I live 89 miles from dealer. Will drive it home and change oil immediately.

Re: Possible causes for oil leak down front of engine?

Further to my previous posts, I had the timing chain case oil leak repaired some 5 - 6 weeks ago. A few days ago I have noticed a new oil leak dropping onto the garage floor in a different place. Looks to be about halfway back along the block and on the left hand side. (Of course with all the guards in place it could be running some distance before finding an outlet)
The car is going in for a new reversing camera on the 17th so I'll report back again once they've looked at it then.

It has been a few weeks since I got the Jeep back and the leak is BACK! Tightening the two bolts on the timing cover did not fix the leak. Off to the dealer to replace the timing cover gasket.

Re: Possible causes for oil leak down front of engine?

I wonder how many engines left the factory with improper torque? Was it an engineering error or an assembly issue?
I'm starting to wonder if I should torque my bolts now as a preventative measure, but don't know what the spec is.

Re: Possible causes for oil leak down front of engine?

Referring to my post of 12/8 about another oil leak following on from the timing chain case repair, the car went in today and has been diagnosed with a leaking sump gasket.
I am fairly certain that this leak would have occurred by them removing or at least loosening the sump when doing the timing chain case.
Either way I'm pissed off, and they reckon it's a two day job to repair the sump!
Mind you, they estimated four days for the timing chain case and it only took two - one day sounds about right to me.

Re: Possible causes for oil leak down front of engine?

Got the Jeep from the dealer last week to "fix" the oil leak from the timing cover. No oil for a couple of days, then crawled under to check and once again oil is leaking from the front of the engine. WTF!! Very frustrating! Back to the dealer.

I do not understand how hard it is to pinpoint an oil leak and repair accordingly. This is not rocket science.

Re: Possible causes for oil leak down front of engine?

I am in the exact same boat Barefoot. This is the 3rd time I have had mine in for an oil leak which appears to be coming from the front cover. In my situation, I am 99.99% sure this is a direct result of the dealership overfilling it at the last oil change by 2 quarts as I documented in an earlier post back in May. The first time I took it in they drained out the 2 extra quarts and said that the leak was from three bolts in the front cover that did not have sealant on them from the factory. This at least slowed down the leak, but it returned. The 2nd visit to the dealer they said they could not find anything. Third visit I showed them a cell phone pick of the leak and the impending drip on the drain plug and asked why I can see the leak and their tech cannot. They have now had the Jeep for a week and are still saying that it is the front cover but now it is a leak coming from a 2 - 3" gap between two of the bolts in the front cover. We will see where this leads once I finally get it back.
