Re: Possible causes for oil leak down front of engine?

Can anyone post a pic and highlight the bolts in question along with the factory recommended torque? I'd like to do a preemptive strike and double check the torque values BEFORE the headache begins.

I will try to get them to point it out to me when I pick it up and then will try to post some pics. Here is where it was dripping down to:

Premium members have access to the VM motori engine service manual for our EcoDiesels.

Can see the manual, which is a photo copy, but no torque values.

Can't help with the torque values, but I will ask when I pick up the Jeep from the dealer. They are coming to get the Jeep Friday and hopefully start to work on it Monday. This is after the dealer "fixed" it

Yeah, that's more like a crash course pamphlet than a service manual.

Re: Possible causes for oil leak down front of engine?

My 2015 Eco Summit just started having the leak issue. Took 3 trips to ID the source. Dealer says it's the timing chain cover. Just curious but this seems to be wide spread. And yes my oil was not overfilled. I changed my oil, let it drain for an hour and then refilled with just under 8 qts. Bought the Penzoil and the filter at a Jeep dealer.

Re: Possible causes for oil leak down front of engine?

This is a gasket issue on the timing chain cover. It is a multi day fix. The cyn head must be removed to get to the cover to redo the timing chain cover seal. This problen is all over the RAM sites also. It was a manufacturing problem - I'm quessing the robot did not squirt the proper bead on to the cover.... FCA must know this is an issue as there are far too many posts about it. I get mine back this week after several days in the shop.

In my situation, I am 99.99% sure this is a direct result of the dealership overfilling it at the last oil change by 2 quarts as I documented in an earlier post back in May. The first time I took it in they drained out the 2 extra quarts and said that the leak was from three bolts in the front cover that did not have sealant on them from the factory. This at least slowed down the leak, but it returned. The 2nd visit to the dealer they said they could not find anything. Third visit I showed them a cell phone pick of the leak and the impending drip on the drain plug and asked why I can see the leak and their tech cannot. They have now had the Jeep for a week and are still saying that it is the front cover but now it is a leak coming from a 2 - 3" gap between two of the bolts in the front cover. We will see where this leads once I finally get it back.
Think you guys got problems...

Had the Eco diesel in for the timing chain cover oil leak problem. They had it for 6 days. Picked it up last night.

Driving home on a 2 lane back road in the dark the engine started making noises, this was followed by all kinds of alerts (loss battery power, air bag failure, blind spot alert failure) then the engine stalled and then tried to crank itself. Pushed it out of the middle of the road. Diesel smell everywhere. Lights flashing inside and out.

Tried to crank the engine once and it made some pretty crazy noises so tried to turn it off - the thing would not shut down till after a few minutes. Had it towed back to the dealer. Big pool of diesel on the ground under the engine.

It appears our near new 1 year old Jeep has been screwed up pretty bad. The entire interior smells like diesel. Not sure this will ever be gone. It is choking strong.

It only takes one bad tech to screw up a $59K ride forever.

We'll see what happens in the morning.

My big concern is the odor in the cabin - it was choking - even the tow truck driver said good luck getting that odor out of the fabric, interior and headliner. So bad it was on my clothes and that taste in my mouth.

Left several stains on the roadway. I'm on the VIP program and the dealer will need to call FCA before they do any thing. I will also be calling them.

Suggestions?

Let the games begin.....

Re: Possible causes for oil leak down front of engine?

I can't remember what the dealer fixed to resolve the oil leak. I don't recall it taking a few days either. Whatever they did, fixed the leak and its been running great with no oil leaks for over a year.

I do remember when a service rep was driving the car to us to drop it off, he had to turn around and take it back to the dealership for a strong diesel smell in the cab. That turned out to be a loose fuel fitting on an injector (I believe).
