Re: Rapidly deteriorating oil life

Got my SB done regarding this problem and will be taking a 1000 mile trip next week when should give me a good indication if this is working since I have 3K miles at 27% life left...

The TSB is for all 3.0 diesels built on or before 5 April 2014.

Like yours, my vehicle's remaining oil life gauge seemed to be okay at first, but then it appears to have accelerated the lower it got. For example, mine went from 8% remaining to 6% remaining in under 10 miles today.

Well, if yours is unflashed like mine, then you might be going in before 5k. I'm at 6% remaining at 4100 on the odometer.

I'll be changing the oil this weekend.

PS. 10 free oil changes is quite a deal (provided they do it correctly, letting it drain for 30 minutes and using the correct oil). The filter + 2 gallons of oil runs close to $100 for one DIY oil change.

Re: Rapidly deteriorating oil life

Not sure of how the on board computer tests the oil for its useful life
And how it knows when the oil is now past its performance levels
Me thinks is this a bit of bull by Jeep

It is not based on a test it is based on number of cold starts, mileage, temperature and a number of other factors that are calculated during driving..

The calculation clearly was not working properly. Nearly all vehicles being manufactured today have some sort of oil life monitor that uses similar criteria.

Re: Rapidly deteriorating oil life

Sounds like mumbo jumbo to me
New fully synt oil is made to before longer under harder conditions.
So if the don't take into account the quality of the oil then its just mumbo jumbo designed to get you to over service and spend more money

The diesel that we are talking about can only run synthetic oil and should run somewhere between 5000 and 10000 miles depending on use.

Even full synthetic oil breaks down faster in higher heat conditions. Jeep acknowledged the problem and has published a fix that very well looks to be producing the correct results.

There is no way for a vehicle to do a "quality analysis" so I am not sure what you are expecting it to tell you. Someone who drives there vehicle very short distances then allows it to sit for long periods of time will need to change their oil more often then someone who drives strictly on the highway. The system is about lengthening the time between oil changes more than anything.

Edit: My apologies, I just logged onto my PC and I can see you are Aussie. I disagreed with how they lowered your oil change intervals there... the conversation here is slightly different though. The vehicle is designed to go up to 10,000 miles between oil changes (16100.00km) or one year in optimal conditions.

Re: Rapidly deteriorating oil life

Here in australia we are told oil change required every 10,000 kilometers not miles
which would be in miles only 6.200 miles

So me thinks were are being ripped off

I am aware of the situation there... I don't understand the reasons behind it but I also don't disagree with you.

Re: Rapidly deteriorating oil life

Regardless of when I hit the zero mark I will change oil and take a sample for Blackstone and post it. That way I can adjust my oil changes to what is reasonable based on facts. The oil change algorithms have been around for a long time. My BMWs back to 1990 used this and my last BMW M3 which I sold last year had 284K miles using the algorithm they used. Others have this now but our JGC diesel is way off or I hope it is way off.
Looking for others to do oil analysis so we can all get a sense of what is reasonable for changes. My plan is to do two analysis on both of the first two changes and see what the results are.
