Rattling from the fuel system

I have a Summit Diesel. Took delivery on 11/13/13. Right away I noticed some odd noises. It usually happens when it's cold, and most often right after initial start up in the morning. I most often hear the noise at low speed, as soon as I take my foot off the accelerator pedal. Don't usually hear it while accelerating. I have heard the noise while the car is idling, just after startup on a very cold morning, but this is not normal. The noise usually goes away after a few minutes of operation.

The "noise" that I've been talking about is some kind of a rattle. Unfortunately that's the best I can describe it. It does not change in relation to engine RPM. It's usually not extremely loud... if the radio and climate control is on you might miss it. But on at least 2 occasions it has been loud (evoking "OMG" from passengers). It starts immediately after the accelerator pedal is released and continues until the car comes to a stop or the accelerator pedal is pressed again. It seems to originate from the driver side, and in the front of the car. I might describe it as behind the firewall on the driver's side of the car.

The noise is not consistent. It seems to happen most often when the car is cold. By cold... I mean less than 35F. However, there have been at least 2 occasions when I was driving for more than 30 minutes, turned the engine off, started again within a couple of minutes, and then noticed the noise.

So.... I took it in to Jeep. They had it for 9 days. They did a lot of scratching of heads and thinking real hard. Chrysler engineers got involved because "a couple of other cars" are experiencing the same thing. They believe it's fuel system related. They replaced filters. But... they still don't know what the problem is. They ended up just giving me the car back with no resolution. I'm told I'll receive a call when Chrysler figures it out.

I just rattled my way back to work and decided to include the forum on the subject. Maybe someone else has experienced a similar issue?

I feel like mine is doing something similar. I'm still not sure whether it would be considered "normal" or not. The noise is a groaning/growling sound when it's cold out and seems to be on the driver side. Really loud when foot is off accelator and rpm's are still around 2000 and coming down. It's rather annoying...but I know how that visit to the service department will go. The dealership service people said that U-Connect updates were up to the consumer (doubt that's true...but I haven't had issues with my old release so feel fortunate). I'm still trying to isolate the sound to the engine, transmission, fuel system, rubbing rattle. Hopefully the issue is identified or it works itself out with time. Currently at 1000 miles. My previous 2013 Hemi had the panoramic sunroof rattle in cold weather that dealer/Chrysler ignored me on. Instead of pushing too hard, I traded it in.

I'm experiencing this same issue in addition to an annoying rattle coming from the headliner somewhere above the driver's seat. Both seem to be occurring at idle and while driving. I took delivery on Saturday 12/21, up to 650 miles now. I'm not going to be happy with this vehicle if it's already rattling from day one and they aren't able to come up with a fix. The ride is great otherwise and this is my biggest issue so far.

Re: Rattling from the fuel system

Can anyone post an audio clip of this noise? Could it be the high pressure fuel pump? EGR valve state? Curious if it gets louder with the air filter removed, or if it can be isolated with the hood open. Does the vehicle have to be in motion to hear it, or does it happen sitting still as well?

I will try to get an audio clip, but I doubt I'll be able to capture the sound with my camera. Generally, the vehicle has to be in motion for the noise to be heard. Otherwise I'd be in the engine bay with an automotive stethoscope and would get to the bottom of this in a hurry. I haven't messed with the air filter. Where is the fuel pump? I build cars as a hobby, but have been hesitant to dive into this brand new Jeep when it's clearly a Chrysler warranty issue.

Re: Rattling from the fuel system

Since it only seems to happen on decel, I wonder if it might be some sort of de-fueling or other eco measures used in eco mode? Do you hear the rattle in sport mode?

Re: Rattling from the fuel system

Maybe this is the random buzzing noise I hear...only really happens between 20-35 MPH and on the gas. I only really hear it when the radio is turned down but it does emanate from behind the parking brake area. Maybe I will pop the hood and look around in that area.

I tested this today. The noise was the same with eco mode on, and off. No change.

Re: Rattling from the fuel system

Not sure if this is the same but I had a buzz/rattle from behind the dash on the left hand side, especial at 25-40mph with foot on the gas (diesel) from the first day I bought it. Dealer identified it as quote 'fuel pipe under bonnet rattling against chassis...adjusted pipe'. Their fix worked. Note that I'm in the UK and we call the 'hood' the 'bonnet'.

Re: Rattling from the fuel system

I'm having something sort of similar, '14 Summit with about 700mi on it. Around 1450-1500 RPM there is a rattle/buzz noise from under the hood. Not related to gear or movement as I can reproduce while parked. Going to have to make a service call for it.

Re: Rattling from the fuel system

Went to dealer, they "fixed" an issue with the AC line. Except it didn't resolve the noise. Not a great first experience.
