Reliability of the 2015 Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel

Hey y'all!

I am deciding between a 2016 Grand Cherokee Diesel and a 2016 Range Rover Sport, both diesel models. My question to you is, how is the reliability of the GC EcoDiesel as compared to the RR Sport?

It may be too early to comment on reliability. Anyone here will tell you the 2014 diesels had some teething problems that were mostly fixed for 2015.

Though for 20k+ more than a loaded GC diesel, would you really cross-shop the two?

The Range Rover Sport, is the upper limit for my budget. So, I am comparing the two.

Re: Reliability of the 2015 Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel

The only common problems with the 14/15 Ecodiesels are the P20EE errors (mostly 14's so far) and broken DEF injectors. The first seems to be resolved on the 15's and was a simple fix even on the 14's (software flash followed by new cat). The injector issue was improved on the 15's and solved by installing a plate made by a member (Dom) on this site.

Really, both the 14 and 15 Ecodiesels have proven to be quite reliable so far. 16's should be even better.

That is why I have been waiting until this time, or a bit more to get the GC EcoDiesel considering that I do not get the first year models of any car because of possible bugs to be resolved.

Re: Reliability of the 2015 Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel

the RR diesel six uses EGR and SCR to meet emissions. I'm not a fan of EGR technology and I recommend going for a GC ED based on ability to eliminate EGR with a tune from GDE.

Can you clarify the difference between EGR, SCR, ED, and GDE please when it comes to Diesel emissions?

EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation (reduces fuel economy, dirty, reduces NOx emissions)

SCR = Selective Catalytic Reduction (uses a catalytic converter and DEF to reduce harmful emissions)

ED = EcoDiesel

GDE = Green Diesel Engineering (manufacturer that makes diesel performance tuners, etc.)

I've crossed shopped the JGC and X5 last year and went for the X5 which was 20k more. Now I want the JGC. Although the X5 is a great car it's not 20k price difference great. I would love to get the Range Rover but I need my car to start every morning flawlessly to get me to work and from reading various forums that's rarely the case for the RR.

It seems that the 2014 EcoDiesels had the majority of the problems reported with the software. However, the 15's, are more reliable. Is this accurate?

Re: Reliability of the 2015 Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel

There was an update in late 2013 to the MY14, which seemed to fix alot of the gremlins. There have been some ongoing transmission issues (rough gear changes, etc), but they seem to have hit the V6 gas version more so, that transmission is slightly different the the diesel/V8 trans.

I have had a Jan2014 built diesel limited (export) for over a year now, been fine for reliability.
