Re: Rotella T-6 in our diesel?

Just had my dealer service manager call Jeep to get a straight answer. He had no info from Jeep on the change, but the 2015 owner manual diesel supplement had the statement below. Jeep told him that the DIESEL SUPPLEMENT REVISION IS CORRECT. Use the Rotella T6 5-40 or MS 10902 equivalent in the 2015 (assume 2014 as well) Jeep diesel.

"We recommend you use 5W-40 synthetic engine oil such
as MOPAR or Shell Rotella that meets FCA Material
Standard MS-10902 and the API CJ-4 or ACEA E9/E7 or
ACEA A3/B4 engine oil category is required."

Not that I'd trust anything from a retailer over what Chrysler specifies (though they're starting to come around), but IDParts.com is now providing T6 with their oil change kits for all years of the WK2.

fyi, there's a $5 per gallon rebate from Shell through the end of this year, max of 4 rebates ($20):

And if you combine that with the sale O'Reilly's is having now through August 30th at $19.99/gal, that brings the price down to $14.99/gal or $3.75/qt for two oil changes. Just grabbed four from my local store today.

With the supply of good aftermarket oil filters on the rise, this deal for oil and a $12 Mahle filter makes for a $42 oil change. Can't beat that!

Re: Rotella T-6 in our diesel?

New guy, first post.

I took my 2015 Summit in for it's 20k service, and the recall, and they put in Rotella at my request. I talked to the service writer about the change, and he called the service manager while i was standing there on speaker phone.

Service manage stated that there had been some lower rod bearing problems and that is why they were making the changed to Rotella. I have no idea if this is true or not. Maybe the service manager did not know i was standing there at the time. I did get charged for the oil change. Peace of mind for me at this time.

I was also under the impression that the recall was some sort of lock out when the door is open, and the jeep is not in park. All mine did was flash another warning on the dash telling me the jeep was not in park, no lock out. Also, the flash alone take at least 3 hrs because it come direct from the mother ship, not from any dealer software.

Hope this helps, and i am enjoying the forum. Jeep is running great by the way, with no problems to report.

Re: Rotella T-6 in our diesel?

Is 5W-40 Motor Oil Now Suggested For All EcoDiesel Engines?

Interesting read. They seem to think the issue was that the lower viscosity oil was causing high amounts of main bearing failures.

Re: Rotella T-6 in our diesel?

I'm using Pennzoil Ultra Euro L 5w30 and change the oil no more than 5,000 miles and draw a sample each time and send it in to Blackstone. I'm getting excellent results from these samples. Do you think this oil just can't handle the extended runs of 10,000 miles?

Re: Rotella T-6 in our diesel?

So... Is the flash needed for 2014 and 2015's?
I ask because I took my 2015 JGC to Ziegler in Schaumburg yesterday and they told me that there is not a flash for 2014 and 2015... Only for the 2016.

Ziegler didn't even have the new oil, although they did show that the new oil (MS-10902) was required.

All in all, I must say that the employees at Ziegler in Schaumburg, IL are nice, but pretty much clueless about the EcoDiesel.

I'm hoping no flash just switch to 5w40 for the 14's? Anyone know?

Re: Rotella T-6 in our diesel?

I'm not in any hurry to switch to Rotella T6 until I see a clear TSB or factory directive that is official for the 2014 model year. While Pennzoil is more expensive, it is small change really in the overall cost per mile of this vehicle and I don't believe it is actually hurting anything.... If we can switch, hey that's great, ( I'm well aware of Rotella T6, used in my RAM Cummins for many years...) but I believe the original MS-11106 oil requirement is fully effective till I get something in writing.....

Re: Rotella T-6 in our diesel?

The question that doesn't seem to get answered is why. Is it a longterm mechanical issue? For a car company to spend the money to tell all of their dealers to change the oil in all existing 2016 ecodiesel unsold inventory is crazy. They are dumping lots of fresh oil.
There is got to be a reason. I wish Chrysler/Jeep engineering would communicate with us and at least the dealers. They went to the effort to change the requirements in our manuals. Why?
