Re: Rotella T-6 in our diesel?

My Dad used to use Rotella T6 in his 1999.5 TDI Jetta and loved it. In the recent Mopar TSB 18-078-16, the Mopar p/n for Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 per quart is listed as 68001332PA.

Local Wally-World has Rotella T6 5w-40 for $19.16/g and Shell has $5/g mail in rebate here:

The TSB only shows 2016 models. Will our older models be changing also?

Yes. The diesel supplements for previous years have already been changed and published on jeep.com. Use the T6... it's unequivocally better for the engine than the old MS-11106 spec oils.

I don't understand Why would they be so insistent we use MS-11106 when T6 has been available all along? I've never heard of anyone locking down an engine to only a few select oils, then out of no where opening it up. I'm not a believer in switching oil brands. I've always stuck with what I started using. Are they thinking these engines are going to start having internal problems so lets find a reason to blame somebody's bad oil? Love my WK2, not sure Chrysler knows what they are doing with these engines.

This has been extensively discussed in this forum in the past as well as in the other concurrent thread about this topic (ps, this thread is the dupe).

It's simple. What's best for our engine is to get rid of all the nasty stuff the EPA forced the engineers to do to it. So: turn off EGR, get rid of PCV, and cut off the DPF. The SCR basically does nothing useful for the owner except make the garage smell like cat urine, so delete that too if only to improve reliability.

Makes sense, right?

The MS-11106 oil spec was a deliberate decision to sacrifice engine protection to preserve long-term DPF function (and possibly to slightly improve the fleet CAFE number towards the target demanded by the EPA). Everyone knew all along this was worse for the engine compared to something like Rotella T6. Thank the EPA.

Daily reminder that the "cheating" VW engineers were the good guys.

Perhaps to, something else worth considering: a drastic falling out between bedfellows FCA and Pennzoil, directly to the point that unsold units are having the oil changed on the lot - with FCA specifically citing Rotella as the spec oil of preference.

Shell owns Pennzoil and Quaker State since about 2002 I think.

Funny because my theory was the same as yours until I looked further.

Re: Rotella T-6 in our diesel?

Excellent news for us all!!!

I used Rotella in our motor home for years and am glad to see that we don't have to "bend over" to change our oil now !

Re: Rotella T-6 in our diesel?

So what's the prevailing wisdom on changing viscosities when you're 112,000 miles into the life of your engine? Have been a faithful Pennzoil user this whole time and the last 8 quarts I purchased (with the Pennzoil rebate) were $6/quart.

Should I have major concerns about switching to a 5W40 with this many miles or is this such a good move for the health of the engine that I should be thinking "better late than never"?

I would say "better late than never", although you are doing very well with the Pennzoil.
