Re: Service DEF - See Dealer

Below is a photo I took under my vehicle when new. You can see that exhaust components are very vulnerable. From forum posts I have seen, it appears that several owners have had the injector damaged. I added some shielding made of expanded steel and a steel strap. I used an existing threaded hole and existing skid plate bolts. (I will try and post photos later. I am out of town this week.)

Great picture. Once it gets warmer, I'll have to fabricate something as we'll. it's unbelievable to me to see all the "exposure" under there....

Yeah I had the same problem, DEF injector broke off due to heavy snow with 60 miles on my jeep. I was not a happy camper. Took two weeks to fix. No problems in the most recent heavy snow though.

Re: Service DEF - See Dealer

Putting a wiring harness like that OVER a frame rail and exposing it is one idiotic kludge!

I'm definitely checking it out after I take delivery of ours on Saturday.
If enough of us complain then Jeep should, at the very least, retrofit some sort of protector plate for it or perhaps some smart Jeep aftermarket company will manufacture one for DIY'ers!

Here's how the replacement timeline went:

3:00 put Jeep in work bay
3:17 raise lift
3:22 looking at old injector
3:33 started removal of old injector
3:44 lowered lift
4:22 started engine
4:27 backed out of work bay test drive?
4:33 returned from test drive - parked outside
4:48 said it was done

Re: Service DEF - See Dealer

This thread made me look down at the front passenger underbody. I was horrified to see that my DEF injector feed hose was actually the lowest part in the underbody. Looks like there is some freedom at the hose route and the clips are very lightly holding it. Such a "low-hanging fruit" is just waiting to catch with a twig and rip-off the injector. I used a toggle-bolt type drywall anchor together with washers and a single hole steel strap to hold the hose tight in place. I'm still worried about the vulnerability of this whole jerry-rigged injector setup and would love to see what mtnmerlin rigged to protect it.

Here are the before and after pics:

Re: Service DEF - See Dealer

Oh wow I will have to take another look at my cable and do something about it. I do a lot of off-roading.

Yikes! Glad you caught it. My hoses were tight before I added protection. I will try to take a photo soon.

Re: Service DEF - See Dealer

Below are some photos of the protection I added for the DEF injector and hoses. I added a steel strap from an existing threaded hole towards the left-rear tire to an existing bolt further front of the injector. (Yeah, I know that is vague.) The steel strap is folded over the bolt then goes back. That is how I figured was simplest for my fabrication skills. Then there is 13 gauge steel expanded metal that goes from the under body edge to near the exhaust. There was a little shaping and creative cutting of the expanded metal required. I used cable ties to attach it to the steel strap and an existing bolt and nut/stud to secure the screen at the vehicle edge. (Now that is vague.) I painted the steel to help protect against rust, and added rubber strips in places to prevent noise from vibration. It is hard to take pictures under the vehicle, but they should give an idea of the result. I have more photos available upon request. I used expanded metal instead of solid metal since it is easier to cut and shape, won't trap heat, and I can see what is behind it.

The idea is to prevent the hoses from being grabbed and to protect the (delicate) injector.

I did something similar to other side to protect an ECM near the center of the vehicle.

I'll be doing something similar to your solution. If it would warm up a little and stop raining around here I could get going on it. Thanks for the pictures.
