Re: Service DEF - See Dealer

Maybe I'm wrong but I think the DEF fluid is extremely corrosive? If so, I'm assuming that when the injector fell off it sprayed fluid all over. Any comments from the dealership wrt this?

Good question, Had't thought of that and I'll have to check. Apparently Chysler's fix is to move the DEF control cables higher and wire tie them up??????

I found information wrt corrosion on FAQ page at the Home - discover Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) website. It is indeed corrosive on certain metals including carbon steel and aluminum. So, thoroughly washing the undercarriage with water seems to be a good idea, but not sure if it is sufficient. /M

Re: Service DEF - See Dealer

Does the skid plate cover this area?

My DEF injector hose was hanging low (could see it walking up to the jeep) and I pointed it out to the service advisor when I dropped off for an oil change. 2 days later got a message saying the wrong DEF is detected. Taking it back next week for that issue.

No,
The skid plates, included in our ORAII package, do NOT cover the DEF line. After reading about the issues, I "got out and got under" and checked it. A little disappointed in Chrysler, as there are frame rail holes adjacent to where the harness is routed. With a small modification, they could have routed it through the chassis frame rail rather than routing the harness OVER the frame rail.

Similar issue with DEF injector and wiring. Was doing some very easy off-roading on a ranch, ran over some brush and tore the wires loose! Tubing wire bundle and injector design error! Its too exposed for off-road! Hope Jeep or after market come up with solution! Now have to worry about deep snow and water as well!

Re: Service DEF - See Dealer

It looks like the DEF system was just put on as a last minute idea. I guess it would have cost too much and take too much time on the line to do it right and just guide it through the frame some how. Wires and cables on a vehicle like this have no business being so exposed below the frame. All they want to do is get the vehicle out the door and sold. Good thing the DEF fluid isn't flammable ( or is it )? I hate to say it but it takes people getting hurt before they'll do anything about a problem like this.

DEF is not flammable.

It makes me rethink how I'm going to make a run up the Trans Taiga road though.

Is it possible to disconnect the DEF injector, route the cables through the frame rail via the holes, and re-connect it? Would said disconnection cause the DEF tank to drain out onto your garage floor?

The steel strap is folded over the bolt then goes back. That is how I figured was simplest for my fabrication skills.
How much bending was necessary to fit this strap? What tools did you use? Was it just like a slight S-bend or a more complex shape? Sorry for all the questions I'm just trying to guage how difficult it will be to follow in your path. I've never fabricated anything from steel, only aluminum and fiberglass.

Could use spray-on bedliner as well. Very corrosion-resistant and is not going to wear off in a hurry.

Re: Service DEF - See Dealer - DEF wiring reroute.

Well, I believe it could. However, to REALLY get into the job, you would need a good hoist to get under and properly check out the routing etc.

As you know, with engineering, ANYTHING is possible.....for a price LOL !
