Is it functioning properly? If not, I'd call that a failure. Very poor design IMO. I really think running through some water did mine in. You just never think of water being an issue like that as a matter of course when you're driving. I mean, who hasn't run through some standing water?

I hit a large puddle Sunday and within a few miles got the service DEF message. Brought it in Tuesday and the dealer says it needs a new DEF pump. Could take up to a week for the part. They gave me a Dart as a loaner. What a pos.

Re: Service DEF - See Dealer

Completely unacceptable! They need to re-design the DEF injector and make it out of something more rugged than brittle plastic that won't stand up to a puddle!

Terrible indeed. Maybe some complaints to NHTSA from folks who've experienced it would help motivate ChryCo to voluntarily recall and replace with better design. I wonder if '14 Ram 1500s have the same crappy design or if they improved it.

Re: Service DEF - See Dealer

Continued reports like these make me want to cancel my CRD order and just stick with my hemi. My wife would kill me if I drop $50k on a car that is in the shop as much as a 20-year-old beater.

I just heard from the dealer and it wasn't the DEF pump they replaced it was the DEF injector. Frustrating because this is supposed to be an off road capable vehicle. I'll be submitting a complaint with the NHTSA. Chrysler needs to come up with a fix. I wonder how many injectors need to be replaced before they realize they have a problem.

Yeah, I feel ya. My wife would flip if we had to put it in the shop anytime soon. Guess I'll be making mods on delivery day. First, find a method to water-proof the injector. Secondly, tighty-up the cables/hoses. Third, add steel guards.

Maybe they spent too much time on interior aesthetics and ran out of time dealing with the EPA driven crud that had to be done to to make it road legal.

I'm getting a little less excited about getting my order in. We need a sticky for all the think new owner need to do and be mindful off right off the bat:

1) remind the dealership to top-off the DEF tank.
2) put a rubber boot over the injector and water=proof both ends of the boot.
3) cinch hanging hoses and cables on bottom
4) add steel guards to protect said hoses cables
5) don't idle it for too long if you want it to last with all the EPA junk on it.
6) change your oil more frequently than 10kmiles since it too, in a way, is acting as a filter.
7) DEF can be bought much cheaper and added much easier at truck stops.

Feel free to add to it.

One problem I do see about putting a boot or something over the injector is that it has heat shielding around it that doesn't look removable in a way it can be put back on as-from-factory. So if anything does happen to it, despite your mods to prtect it, the dealership will say you tampered with it and that's why it broke/failed/etc.

Why do you want to do that? I think that the concern with water has to do with driving through a not-insignificant puddle of it at speed and the impact knocking the injector out of position. Or did I miss something?

Guess you're right. I had to go back and read plainmek's post where he said that he just ran thru a puddle on the highway. I thought his just malfunctioned, but it broke.

I'll be using mine for a getting a boat in and out of water, which means getting the rear tires in up to rear axle deep at times. It just had be a bit worried, but I guess now, water ingress is not an issue, so I'll edit the post.

Re: Service DEF - See Dealer

Well you still might be correct. Just because we haven't seen reports of water ingress damaging the injector doesn't mean it can't happen. They show JGCs fording water in the promo videos but those may not be diesels.

Re: Service DEF - See Dealer

I really believe it's the impact of the water that's snapping the DEF injectors off. When I took mine in, the mechanic said there was no visible damage to the surrounding area and no damage to the metallic heat insulation on the injector. He said it looks like it just snapped off. A mass of water would be the most likely culprit IMO. If I were ordering a GC diesel, this would not be a deal breaker for me. There are too many other positive things that outweigh this annoyance.

Re: Service DEF - See Dealer

Wife got the "DEF Take to Dealer" Message the other day. She took it to the dealer and they told her no callout for the DEF, but there was an update that needed to be done. While there she told them about the little wobble (Could hardly tell) in the front and had the tires rotated and balanced. No more wobble, and everything updated.
