Shell v-power diesel fuel

Anyone try this fuel? It's a bit more than standard diesel fuel so was wondering if anyone noticed any mpg/performance increase while using it Shell V-Powerâ„¢ Diesel - Canada

Thanks

Re: Shell v-power diesel fuel

We don't get that here in Texas. I would surmise that the additional cost is for the additive package, especially the Cetane improvers. We usually add a product such as Power Services Diesel or similar down here. Unfortunately, here south of the border, the Ag lobby money has us buying Biodiesel Blends (minimum of 5 percent) in most places.

Thanks. Does higher cetane help with performance or mileage?

Meh. Maybe 5%, but can you really say for certain that it's the fuel that changed your 8.4 L/100 km to 8.0 L/100 km? Personally, I've found that there's too much noise in the signal to tease out that small of a difference. Weather, traffic, tire pressures, how much elevation delta you had, etc, all play a larger role. If you want the possibility of a boost, then listen to philbytx and buy some DieselKleen from Walmart/wherever and dose your own tank and see if you can imagine any difference.

Full disclosure: I generally dose with DieselKleen even though I can't say I've noticed any difference. So... superstition?

In terms of fuel you want to look for places that seem like they have high turnover. It's less ideal if you have to buy from a station that looks like it's selling diesel that's been in the tank since 2013. So, a Shell/BP/truck stop along the highway is generally "good" if it looks well maintained. Mom & Pop's Gas N' Go in the back alley of a town of 1,500 that has a single, filthy automobile diesel pump in the back... not so much.

Oh, and protip: buy a box of disposable nitrile gloves and put them in the cargo area. Wear one whenever handling a diesel pump. You'll thank me later.

Re: Shell v-power diesel fuel

Where I fill up most of the time there are 3 stations in a row. Shell and two more local (Speedway and Thorntons) - it's an ongoing price war. I really can tell NO difference in the Shell vs. the others. All 3 are right off of I-75 so they sell a lot of fuel.

Wow, either your cardlock station has an auto diesel pump or you really enjoy dealing with funnels in order to refuel using the larger-diameter truck fillers (haha).

Seriously, though, it sounds cool if it has an auto diesel pump. I've never been to one. Are you affiliated with a commercial trucking firm?

In the past when I have pulled into the truck lanes in order to get fresh DEF I've had station attendants and truckers come over to me to see what the crazy Jeep driver was doing. One attendant came running out to warn me that I was putting in DEF into what she thought was my gas tank.

Protip: wear disposable nitrile gloves on *both* hands when dealing with a DEF filler (you can get by using just one gloved hand when refueling diesel). You'll thank me later.
