I'll raise my hand and say my step-daughters (29, 27 and 24) who drive a Renault, Subaru and Mazda (going down the list) and who have driven our GC on occasion have never been given instructions on the shifter and none of them have ever complained nor had an issue with it.

I have been in the vehicle with at least two of them as a passenger at times whilst they are driving and have observed them handling the shifter just fine. (and trust me, they aren't backwards in coming forwards with comments if they deemed it necessary)

First time driving though they did, each of them, look for the park-brake - cue instruction - 'it's foot operated'.

Re: Shifter Recall

Had the '14 now have the '16 and hands down I like the new shifter better. The 14' was fun and new at first, but in 2 years owning it, I recall times where it was finicky into which gear that it would shift. IMHO, it just leaves room for accidents to occur, which is eliminated with the new model.

Yes, I got rid of the SF unicorn. I waited a year for the ecodiesel to be released, and got one of the first off the line. Problem was that in the first few off the line, they used a mix of american and european parts, which once removed, would not re-seat without leaking oil. Dealer did the head replacement, and it developed an oil leak off the turbo charger. Long story, but after being in the shop for a month, getting it back for a few days, going in to the shop for another month, back for a few days, and in the shop for a third month, it was too much. Opened a Star case, and had to track each part to its manufacturer. They finally fixed the leak by making a custom part that connected the american to the european part. However, I was concerned about other mixed parts causing problems down the road. I had to fight Jeep to get it replaced, but in the end, they really stepped up to the plate. New Jeep, and I only had to pay the difference between a 14 and a 16, which was a thousand dollars, plus tax on the difference.

Precisely. I wonder how many people who are blaming "stupid operators" would feel comfortable letting a family member who was unfamiliar with the vagaries of this shifter drive their Jeep without specific instruction about how to avoid these scenarios.
While I have gotten used to this finicky shifter over the past 3 months since I bought it, there have been times when I've had difficulty finding R from D to back into my driveway. Yea it takes some getting used to it.

However, I let my 18 yr old step-daughter take it to the store a few days ago (was parked behind her truck) and she called me from her cell in the car to say when she got to the store she tried several times to find R when she backed out of the parking place. She was afraid to try it again and was in the street in front of our house trying to find R to back in the driveway. She came in the house and said she's never driving this thing again (OK so maybe that's not a bad thing.)

If FCA ONLY addresses the vague nature of the electonics of the shifter, then that may be ok. But if they get into other things with a reflash, I'll hold off. Don't want another trans reflash like the last one where I lost close to 2mpg, and now in Eco mode my trans is very abrupt on the upshift from 1st to 2nd

They maintain a "unified image", so any prior updates are also contained within the latest update. You get everything or nothing. No in between where they just tweak part of the code.

Frankly, except for a rare abrupt downshift (feels like someone rear-ended you) from 6th to 5th that I have no clue how to reproduce (only happened twice in 12,000 miles so far, both when passing on two lane highways), my transmission mapping and function has been great.

Yes, I sometimes have to spend a few extra seconds fiddling with the shifter to get it in the gear I intended, but my habitual use of the parking brake before exiting the vehicle saved me the one time I *almost* exited the vehicle with it in R instead of P while going to fold the passenger mirror before putting the vehicle in the garage. I was just in too much of a hurry and didn't purposely verify the gear. The beeping when I opened the door to get out alerted me to the issue, which I promptly corrected.

That *one* almost issue I had has been completely offset (for me) by the otherwise nice look, feel, and ease of entering sport mode just prior to passing on the highway. Just yesterday, I used the sport mode four or five times while passing and thought about how much I liked how easy it was to use each time.

Fuel mileage over the last 2500 miles has averaged over 29 MPG (stock, no tune), so I'm quite happy with how things are.

Frankly, I don't want my transmission flashed at this point. It would have to be a pretty serious defect for me to consider getting a transmission flash done. Mine is a November 2014 built 2015 model year with the factory flash from when it was built.

Re: Shifter Recall

For me, the incorrect gear selection is rare, although I suspect it could be due to insufficient pressure on the shift release button. Sliding the shifter forward sometimes is done with lighter thumb pressure on the shift release button. If the pressure is too light when shifting, it wont allow gears such as reverse and park to be selected. Maybe a lighter spring in the release mechanism may assist along with a brighter dash indicator to confirm which gear you are in.

Re: Shifter Recall

For those that have a dealer that isn't up to snuff remember that these are independent owners and not a FCA stooge. Mine is exceptional could not be happier. However that does not excuse FCA from their responsibility. Remember the DEF injector?
it looks like they have a solution the shifter issue but I for one will not be the first series of beta testers to accept the mod.
I really have very little issue with the shifter besides it being finicky once in a while. However and this is the big point here I am the only one that drives it. If I had someone else not familiar with it I would be concerned enough to show them how to use it and what to watch for.
No vehicle is perfect but man I really like this one.

I am waiting on those that get the implementation done for this shifter mod to hear their feedback...

Re: Shifter Recall

Sorry to sound like a broken record, but if you are cognizant of which gear/position you want, and verify, then this shifter works great. Anytime I get in a new (to me) car, I
make sure I know what gear I'm in prior to taking an action. I just don't see the big deal. If you have a MT, then you better know to leave it in gear (and parking brake) before exiting.

Would I prefer the 2016 transmission? Probably. It would be nice to be able to shift/egress without having to double check. Will the update with more proactive notifications be annoying? Probably not.

Re: Shifter Recall

Had this happen today. Shifter selected Park and EVIC display indicated Reverse. Must have been in park as engine turned off. Restarted and both P and R were displayed with P on the shifter still. Restarted again ALL good. This is not the first time this unusual indication has occurred with my vehicle. Previously I have had P on the EVIC and N on the shifter. Was in Park.
I like this shifter and don't have that big an issue with it but I always cross check the selection.

That there be a problem I would fuss about. Damn, some of you folks got legitimate problems with your shifters.

Re: Shifter Recall

I actually don't have any issues with the shifter in the GC, but now when I get a hire car I have problems. I keep ending up R or N instead of drive just because im use to the short distance of movement in the GC. Maybe they should change every other cars shifter.....run t would be a problem.
