nah, 100.0 of all 14/15 JGC's r in the recall. 16 is still an e-shifter but the stalk stays in a different position for each gear selected instead of springing back to center home position...that is basically the crux of the human interface "issue".

Re: Shifter Recall

Thanks GoPlzGo, clarifies everything as far as the 2016 shifter. Obviously FCA must have had concerns about the 14-15 shifter to revise it like it did to a non centering type.

This might cost them a bundle to retrofit this shifter into the 14-15 models. Would need a new bezel, shifter, new switch for sport mode and whatever else is needed.

At this point I don't think they would go in that direction even though this looks to be the best solution to me. But time will tell, especially with a death in the news.

May be the best legal solution for them also.

This is self-evident. I seriously doubt anyone is questioning whether the user is intending to put the vehicle in park. No one is contesting that this shifter sometimes fails to execute the user's clearly-communicated command. This problem occurs with the new shifter design whereas there are no similar issues with a traditional shifter. This is a new failure mode.

The fact that an alert user can recover from this failure mode is notwithstanding.

Precisely... they *intend* for the vehicle to shift into park, but the shifter fails to implement the command. For example, this shifter annoys me when it intermittently "fights back" and refuses to shift into Park no matter how long you press the shifter forward. Yet another example of the shifter failing to execute the user's clearly communicated command, and something that isn't present in a traditional shifter.

No, I'm an engineer; hence my focus on this poor design. This recentering shifter user interface offers no unique/irreplaceable benefit over a traditional shifter *while simultaneously* being more difficult to use and increasing the safety-critical function count.

I don't want money, and I don't expect FCA to upgrade my shifter to the improved 2016 model traditional shifter. I will, however, reserve the right to cast aspersions on this bad design.

My point being, exactly how much "nannying" does a manufacturer have to put into a vehicle and its systems and at what cost to the consumer in increased vehicle prices? How much the percentage of a vehicle purchase price will increase to include increased costs for product and general liability insurance?
Are you really suggesting that designing, testing, and deploying this new shifter cost less than simply implementing yet another traditional shifter interface that would be familiar to all users and would have none of these "different and exciting" problems?

Re: Shifter Recall

Had a '14 CRD that got repurchased by FCA and now a '15 3.6L. Obviously like it well enough to have put up with all that and still get another one.

This is the only vehicle I've ever owned where shifting into Park is sometimes a 'fail'. I've thought I was in park but was in neutral or reverse. Yes, clearly operator error, however, since I've been driving all manner of cars for 35 years, one does wonder whether this design is inherently unsafe.

It will be fine with me when the vehicle to goes into park automatically when door is open....there are times when I back up my boat trailer with the door open to see...that will have to end.

If I were in the market to buy another, I'd be indifferent if this shifter were still utilized, but would prefer the normal gated version.

The new shifter design first appears in the MY16. It's still an electronic shifter but it operates exactly like the old mechanical straight line shifter does.

This new shifter is currently under recall S28 for the bad wire crimp. They're replacing the entire shifter assy as a result.

Good news there. Members that have already had the recall performed report that you can indeed have the door open while backing up as long as the seat belt is fastened.

Well, I may have spoken too soon. Another member with the recall reports just the opposite. I guess the jury is still out.

Re: Shifter Recall

I just got my jeep back from the shop for the heads. Apparently they did the recall while it was there and honestly I didn't even know until I read it on the service report. I'm test the reverse theory and report back.

This is only with no seat belt- with seat belt fastened you can drive with the door open- See vid attached. Not sure I like it- safety is important but it feels like a "big brother" thing....
another confirmation...thanks....from my standpoint that's good news all things considered...big bro is here to stay
