Shifter Recall

Well, looks like the recall may make the problem worse, or maybe more irritating. Bells, whistles, whatever... They need to install the redesigned shifter to solve the problem. Fiat Chrysler recalls 1.1M cars, SUVs after 41 injuries

Re: Shifter Recall

I guess just like the CAT issue there going to screw around with the shifter instead of just replacing it with the 2016 version. It's like, lets try a band-aid first. Just like the Cat issue that they made the poor 2014 guys go through a reflash and prayed it worked. Of course it didn't. I need to understand exactly what they are going to do with the tranny before I have them touch mine. I think I will watch and see for awhile.

Re: Shifter Recall

Well I also have a BMW with the airbag recalls so for me waiting to hear how the implementation goes is the deal. Many hate the transmission reflash and lost mileage.
Best to not be one of FCA beta testers and get feedback too.
Love the Jeep however and while I have never had an issue causing an incident I sure have found the shifter to be plenty finicky.

Re: Shifter Recall

I don't think you'll ever see them replace the shifter-that would be ridiculous. Yes, it's an annoying shifter, but to replace it would mean replacing most of the top part of the console and who knows what underneath. Not necessary given that the issue is user error. So instead, we all have to have the annoyances. Why don't people, especially in the States, use their parking brake? That would eliminate most of the accidents I would think.

Re: Shifter Recall

This shifter takes a little to get used to, you must actually pay attention while moving to the "P" position and then exit your vehicle. There is also TWO INDICATORS ( inside instrument cluster & shifter itself) that you can observe to insure you are in "P" (park) before getting out... I guess nothing is idiot proof! This shifter is not for everyone!!!! my 2 cents!!

Re: Shifter Recall

Force of habit from my Vette, but I always use the parking brake before exiting the jeep.... it holds the jeep in place even if you were to leave it in Drive. Shifter is annoying but works fine if you pay a little bit of attention whilst using it hehe

Shifter Recall

From a safety perspective,
There's no need for a car to be in any other position than P when the engine is off.

Off-Course there are exceptions (like towing behind RV) but generally that is the direction of the market.

Jeep is very re-active, and not very pro-active. look at competition.

So....would you send a newly licensed driver off in your Jeep and not re-enforcing to check for P... old shifter style?

(No way for new driver period to drive my Jeep......but you get the idea)

A new driver would probably have less of a problem. They just have to learn something. That's easier than having to relearn something that has become automatic over many years/decades.

The problem with making something Idiot Proof is that as soon as you do that, they go and make a bigger Idiot.
