Re: Significant oil leak

Going to my friends shop tomorrow to drain the dealer overfill and get the level right. Then i will have to test drive it for a while to find out if the overfill caused a leak in a gasket or was just coming from some other opening. Guess i will just leave the skidplate and fiberboard off during the test mileage.

Wondering if a service manual mistakenly says 10qts that the techs use because our owners manuals clearly say 8!!!!

Re: Significant oil leak

Would 2qts of oil overfill cause gas mileage to suffer. They did the reflash tsb for false error codes at the same time and i noticed a decrease in gas mileage. I thought it might have been the tsb but couldit have been the oil overfill?

Direct quote from the owner's manual diesel supplement, page 75:
"CAUTION! Overfilling or underfiling the crankcase will cause oil aeration or loss of oil pressure. This could damage your engine."

I suspect I'm not telling you anything you didn't already know, but I'd sure copy this page, staple it to your service receipt showing 10 quart refill and have this recorded in the dealers service history for future reference just in case you need it.

Re: Significant oil leak

This kind of dumbass stuff really bugs me. How did they choose 10qts?? Certainly the service manual is at least as specific as our owners manual. The only reason i let them do it is because the oil plus filter equals $100 and i get 6 free oil changes from them in the buyers contract.

any diesel experts want to weigh in on the damage probability/possibility of putting 2000 miles on with 2qts too much oil? Thx.
