Re: Significant oil leak

I have to go to a friends shop tomorrow morning, drain all the oil, refill to the correct level, clean the entire mess of leaked oil, then test drive to see if it still leaks (like blew a gasket) or if the leak stops when the level is correct. My only other option was drive 3 hours to the dealership and let them screw it up again. They said take it wherever i want and send them the bill. I had to open a customer service case to document the dealer mistake in case there is further engine damage since the owners manual says overfilling can cause oil aeration and engine damage.

i am freaking pissed!!

Almost purchased there. And now I'm glad I didn't. Ended up at Glenn Thomas. I also have free changes there. I live closest to Sierra and Autonation Alhambra, though.

We'll see which I use...

Not impossible. If the primary/large or ring is not installed in the proper groove, or the same o-ring is ripped/torn, oil can be pumped out of the engine past the threads on the oil filter. I know this for a fact, and have pictures as well as video to prove it.

Re: Significant oil leak

I would like to get some opinions on whether or not trouble codes would have triggered the check engine light if the overfill was enough to do any damage. I got no codes. But i still d9nt k ow yet if the oil leak was from an orifice or a blown seal or gasket.

Yep, oil leaks since new. 14 months old now and 14,000km.

1st time they tried to fix it they claimed it was the sump gasket

2nd time they replaced the upper sump gasket

3rd time upper and lower sump gaskets

4th time they replaced the sump itself.

This seems to have worked the best, but still not perfect. Oil no longer hits the garage floor in drops but appears to be a very fine mist. I looked under the car, and it looks like a sweaty residue all over the sump. Getting it looked at again next week.

Edit: it has been over 6mths since it was last looked at.

Re: Significant oil leak

Mine was due to dealership overfilling the engine by adding 2 quarts too much oil.
Anyone know if check engine light would have come on if the overfill was enough to cause damage?

Re: Significant oil leak

There was no charge...free oil change via service contract.

Re: Significant oil leak

I can't think of a sensor that would set a CEL/MIL for a crankcase overfill. You *might* see oil pressure go wonky (i.e. snapping back and forth from 0 to 60) from aeration and the pump running dry, but that would be an extreme scenario.

You're doing the right thing getting it documented. Odds are that will be the end of it.

Internally, your engine is more than likely unharmed. If anything I'd worry about whether or not blow-by got into the exhaust stream. Even so, I'd guess DPF will take care of that before it gets to the cat.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that last bit. Is the cat upstream or downstream of the DPF? I don't have my SFU yet.

Re: Significant oil leak

The cat is upstream(before) the DPF. My cat is the first thing after manifold. That's also where the most heat shielding is installed.

Incorrect. The DPF is immediately after the turbo downpipe, then the Y-pipe where the DEF injector blends DEF into the stream, then the CAT, then the split to dual mufflers and tips.
