Re: Significant oil leak

Can anyone think of an orifice that could have blown out as much oil as you see in the pics to the bottom of the engine? I will be cleaning up the mess this morning and then have to figure out if a gadket or seal was blown or if the mess was from some orifice. It is hard to see even the whole oil pan gasket area to determine where the oil came from.

Re: Significant oil leak

Where would i have been able to see oil pressure? The main display only shows temp, fuel level, speedo and tach. The sub menus only show oil temp, trans temp, def level, tire pressure and batt voltage. Oil pressure is not an available option to the selectable areas of the display either.

It should be in the vehicle info sub menu along with all of the above. It is on mine.

Re: Significant oil leak

I scrolled thru my sub menu again and dont see it.

we drained the excess oil, cleaned the mess and left the skidplate off so we can see if it still leaks. To me it looked like the oil was leaking from the back of the lower pan and the side of the upper part of the pan. I think it is wishful thinking to believe the leak will be fixed by just proper oil level. I yhink it blew out the silicon that seals the pan in at least 2 places. I will put some miles on (keep an eyeon the oil level) and check for potential leaks again next week on the lift.

People let dealerships do their oil changes?

Re: Significant oil leak

Zybane, i got 6 free oil changes with vehicle purchase. Since the oil plus filter costs $100 i thought i would use them. I didnt think professional jeep mechanics would have trouble with a simple oil and filter change, i was wrong.

since the jeep is under warranty i will certainly have to trust them to fix much more complicated things whether i like it or not....so an oil change didnt seem like much since they have to do all warranty repairs for 6 years.

Oil changes are handed off to the pimply faced kid that washes the cars.

I've heard of so many horror stories with oil changes, like yours. Could permanently damage a $10,000 engine, and all the hassle of getting it fixed!

Re: Significant oil leak

Not in this case Zybane. The techs name on the service invoice was their best and most experienced mechanic.

the first thing the manager said was 'i dont know how this would have happened. That is our best mechanic."

add mine to the list of horror stories.

Re: Significant oil leak

Definetely no oil pressure display in the EVIC. Is it available via ODB2?

Re: Significant oil leak

Thats what i thought. Thanks. Now i just have to figure out if it caused a leak in a seal or blew out of an orifice. I guess only mileage and rechecking will tell. The oil we drained out after driving to the shop wasnt frothy....neither was the dipstick oil. So i am hoping the oil wasnt aerating even though 2qts over seems like a lot.

can anyone think of an orifice that could have blown out that much oil on the lower half of the engine?

If the large O-ring is improperly seated/torn on the oil filter cover - oil could pump out the past the o-ring, drip on the intermediate steering shaft, and then down the side of the engine and all the way back to the rear bumper(when the wind catches it).
