Significant oil leak

While we had my jeep on the lift this morning to upgrade the swsybars i saw this:

so we pulled off the skid plate and fiberboard under the oil pan and saw this:

we couldnt see anything coming from the top side so we were thinking maybe an oil pan gasket?

One weird thing. The jeep only has 8000 miles. Yet one of the 4 bolts holding the skidplate on was missing completely. The other 3 had socket marks on the washers as if they had been removed. The only work done on the jeep before today was a dealership free oil change and a tsb reflash....neither of which should have included removing the engine skidplate.

anyone else have oil leaks with their new diesel??

Ya the big drop on the drain plug was what i noticed first but it was just the lowest point gathering oil. As you see in the pics we uncovered quite a mess. The oil level didnt show as low and there were no puddles in the driveway so maybe it is just blowing oil out under boost or something.

Last oil change from dealer... Drove home checked oil and was 1.5 qt high. Drove back and they drained excess and re installed plug. During re install of plug while oil was draining oil splashed all over bottom oil pan and up on top of the plastic under cover. They had to take off the plastic guard under the engine and clean off oil.

I guess what i need to know is since mine was likely overfilled and is leaking, can i just change it myself and fix it or did it likely cause a blown pan gasket or something. Is there anywhere excess oil could be pushed out of without it being a leaky gasket or something they will need to repair.

Direct quote from the owner's manual diesel supplement, page 75:
"CAUTION! Overfilling or underfiling the crankcase will cause oil aeration or loss of oil pressure. This could damage your engine."

I suspect I'm not telling you anything you didn't already know, but I'd sure copy this page, staple it to your service receipt showing 10 quart refill and have this recorded in the dealers service history for future reference just in case you need it.

Interesting. A couple of weeks ago while installing Dom's DEF plate I noticed a little bit of black oil on the drain plug. I ran my finger around the lip of the front skid plate and didn't feel any oil. Like others, I thought it might have been left over from the last dealer oil change so I cleaned the area up with a rag. Today I was under the Jeep putting on the zip ties to complete the DEF line protection and noticed another drop of oil on the drain plug. Looks like I be dropping the front skid plate this weekend to take a look underneath. The Jeep has 8500 miles, one dealer oil change and dealer installed MOPAR skid plates.

Going to my friends shop tomorrow to drain the dealer overfill and get the level right. Then i will have to test drive it for a while to find out if the overfill caused a leak in a gasket or was just coming from some other opening. Guess i will just leave the skidplate and fiberboard off during the test mileage.

Wondering if a service manual mistakenly says 10qts that the techs use because our owners manuals clearly say 8!!!!

This kind of dumbass stuff really bugs me. How did they choose 10qts?? Certainly the service manual is at least as specific as our owners manual. The only reason i let them do it is because the oil plus filter equals $100 and i get 6 free oil changes from them in the buyers contract.

any diesel experts want to weigh in on the damage probability/possibility of putting 2000 miles on with 2qts too much oil? Thx.

Almost purchased there. And now I'm glad I didn't. Ended up at Glenn Thomas. I also have free changes there. I live closest to Sierra and Autonation Alhambra, though.

We'll see which I use...

I have to go to a friends shop tomorrow morning, drain all the oil, refill to the correct level, clean the entire mess of leaked oil, then test drive to see if it still leaks (like blew a gasket) or if the leak stops when the level is correct. My only other option was drive 3 hours to the dealership and let them screw it up again. They said take it wherever i want and send them the bill. I had to open a customer service case to document the dealer mistake in case there is further engine damage since the owners manual says overfilling can cause oil aeration and engine damage.

i am freaking pissed!!

I would like to get some opinions on whether or not trouble codes would have triggered the check engine light if the overfill was enough to do any damage. I got no codes. But i still d9nt k ow yet if the oil leak was from an orifice or a blown seal or gasket.

Yep, oil leaks since new. 14 months old now and 14,000km.

1st time they tried to fix it they claimed it was the sump gasket

2nd time they replaced the upper sump gasket

3rd time upper and lower sump gaskets

4th time they replaced the sump itself.

This seems to have worked the best, but still not perfect. Oil no longer hits the garage floor in drops but appears to be a very fine mist. I looked under the car, and it looks like a sweaty residue all over the sump. Getting it looked at again next week.

I can't think of a sensor that would set a CEL/MIL for a crankcase overfill. You *might* see oil pressure go wonky (i.e. snapping back and forth from 0 to 60) from aeration and the pump running dry, but that would be an extreme scenario.

You're doing the right thing getting it documented. Odds are that will be the end of it.

Internally, your engine is more than likely unharmed. If anything I'd worry about whether or not blow-by got into the exhaust stream. Even so, I'd guess DPF will take care of that before it gets to the cat.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that last bit. Is the cat upstream or downstream of the DPF? I don't have my SFU yet.

Can anyone think of an orifice that could have blown out as much oil as you see in the pics to the bottom of the engine? I will be cleaning up the mess this morning and then have to figure out if a gadket or seal was blown or if the mess was from some orifice. It is hard to see even the whole oil pan gasket area to determine where the oil came from.

Where would i have been able to see oil pressure? The main display only shows temp, fuel level, speedo and tach. The sub menus only show oil temp, trans temp, def level, tire pressure and batt voltage. Oil pressure is not an available option to the selectable areas of the display either.
