Re: Studder/Skipping?

Update: Dropped her off at the dealer this morning, and was subjected to the same runaround as with the P20EE Catalyst issue.

Me: Hi, I made an appointment. Here's the issue (hands over TSB). These are the issues I've been having. Reading over the TSB, it's identical.
Service Advisor: Ok, so you're getting all sorts of codes and such.
Me: No, as I said, no codes, no nothing - just like the TSB.
SA: Ok, let's go read the codes that are stored.
Me: THERE ARE NO CODES.
SA: Ok, great. So I'll plug in the code reader and we'll get this started.
Me: UGH.
SA: So, if what you're saying is correct, you'll need to leave the car with us a while.
Me: Yep. May I please have a Grand Cherokee loaner.
SA: Sure. So, just so you know, we have a bunch of updated software to do for your car which will fix this exact issue you're having. That way we don't have to take your car all apart. It'll work wonders. Trust me.
Me: Look, I'm a straight shooter. I don't like BS. You did this with the CAT issue. Let's not get into it again. Just fix it the right way.
SA: So, these flashes are awesome and will fix everything. We promise.
Me: See you again soon...

Car wasn't ready until just before close, so I'll pick her up in the morning and let you all know the software updates they claim to have done. That said, I KNOW for certain I'll be back getting new cylinder heads. I can't blame the dealer for Chrysler's "requirements" for them to do flashes before repairs. It's just frustrating and such a waste of everyone's time and efforts.

It was probably about two weeks between shuddering issues. We'll see how long it is this time.

Re: Studder/Skipping?

I'm still waiting for this tsb. They are trying to get clearance.
In the mean time I have replace the cat and scr twice already. Codes keep popping up.

Sorry I have been super busy and have posted for this matter. But I'm really annoyed with it now and am going thru an arbitration process to get a replacement vehicle. I do like the jeep when it works. But I haven't been able to go more then 500 miles with out a cel. Sooooo annoying ....

I'll report back ASAP

Re: Studder/Skipping?

[QUOTE=mike_svt;1232220]I experience the exact same issue with my almost new (2000 miles) Ecodiesel. Typically occurs with light throttle at about 55 mph. My Jeep was built in August, which is after the mentioned TSB.

The TSB was July 2015? Your Jeep was built Aug 2014 right? I wonder when VM changed the heads on the assembly line in Italy? By the way, I had my cylinder heads replaced last month and about 2000+ mi with no problems so far. I have to check on that lifetime warranty Eaglescout got but he is leasing so they probably figured he's not buying it at end of lease.

Re: Studder/Skipping?

No, my Jeep was built August 2015. That makes me wonder if my engine has the old heads, or if there is some other issue?

Re: Studder/Skipping?

Mike SVT your post says a 2014 Jeep so you have a 2015 model having been being built Aug 2015? My 2014 was built Oct 2013 which sat on the dealers lot until Sept 2014. So far the new heads are working but would obviously be good to know if you have the new or old design. I can't find any info on it on the web so far. The TSB was easy to find.

Re: Studder/Skipping?

Quick update - forgot to post the software update they did, but I will say that to date, I haven't had the issue again. That said, we'll see how long that lasts (seriously, I do hope it's a fix, but I'm not confident).

I didn't see a reference to a VIN list in the TSB, which is unfortunate. I suppose we could start a thread asking owners who have had this repair performed when their build date was and continually modify the OP of the thread with the latest build date found.

Thanks to WK2Jeeps/Milous, it is. That said, one always has to keep an eye on these TSBs. The original TSB for this from July 2015 was superseded less than a month ago.

Re: Studder/Skipping?

Mine was one of the first off the production line. Dropped it off 4 days ago at the dealer to have the heads replaced. Got a call yesterday that they have a problem. A couple of the glow plugs are seized in the old heads, so they have to order new glow plugs. Problem is that they are on national back order. They have a Director at Jeep looking for replacement. I am supposedly on the top of the list to get them since my engine is torn apart. Hoping they are able to pull a rabbit out of a hat, otherwise I am stuck in the loaner Jeep Patriot till the parts come in. Jeep pays for a 12 hour job, but the mechanic says it is more like 16-20 hours of labor. They have to drop the transmission to get to the thing.
So far, this it the third major repair. The first was the upper oil gasket - 16 hour job for repair. Second was the Cat replacement, and now the heads. The mechanic is becoming intimate with my Jeep.
Even though I have had these issues, I wouldn't trade it for anything. I love the Ecodiesel !!! Best ride I have ever owned. Glad for the extended warranty.

Glad to hear it hasn't recurred. I read the TSB, and while I haven't experienced this shudder I also often downshift using the paddle shifters, and the TSB says that the...

Symptom will go away either by aggressively applying the accelerator pedal or going into a zero throttle deceleration.
Zero throttle decel is the same as downshifting and engine braking, right? As long as your foot is off the gas pedal, that's how I read it. So, instead of having your wife "get on the thing daily," maybe some occasional paddle downshifting when coming to a stop is in order. Just remember that when she's stopped, she's in 1st gear.

I wonder if this is partly why the big riggers do it, to clear excess carbon from the exhaust valve stems. I do it because it was habit in my last car, a 5-spd manual trans (gas engine) - I downshifted for better control of the car esp. on downhills - and it saves on the brakes too. I don't fear brake wear and I've seen other threads here saying our WK2 brakes last long, so that is good.

I read that section of the TSB differently: I read that zero throttle makes the *symptom* go away. That's different than implying zero throttle is a therapy.

E.g. If you have a visceral infection and it hurts when the doc presses your abdomen, but it doesn't hurt when your abdomen isn't pressed, then that scenario doesn't imply that the cure for your infection is simply "not to press on your abdomen".
