Studder/Skipping?

Whelp, I'm back with a question/issue. No CEL's or other warnings that pop up when this occurs (per se), but here it goes...

...wife got the "drive at freeway speeds" messages for a regen. I took the car out and as I was getting on the freeway, I noticed the throttle/engine response immediately seemed retarded. As I got up to about 58 mph, I immediately felt the car skip/studder. Didn't feel like a misfire. More like the fishbites that people describe - like the ABS was going on or something. No noticeable noise. Only under throttle - heavy or light. This went on between 60 and 70 mph until the car cleared its notice and the regen was complete.

Didn't happen again.

Until today. Getting on the free way after getting gas, and immediately noticed the same issue. But there was no message this time about regen. Retarded throttle response and once I hit about 58 mph, the car was skipping/studdering between 60 and 70 mph. I used the paddles to downshift and see if I could feel it in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th - yep, but it's more pronounced in the higher gears with light throttle. Low speeds when I got off the freeway didn't cause any skipping/studdering. Went to the store. Got back in the car about an hour later. Drove home at freeway speeds - nothing.

So, my Diesel Jeep Garage friends, what say you? Again, there were no immediate codes (didn't use a code reader, but nothing flashing or CEL). No stored messages. Everything else has been performing normal. Anyone else have these issues? Thoughts? Next steps (besides the obvious of getting to the dealer)?

Well, my friend, here thinking you hit the nail on the head. Sounds exactly like what's described there. Hmm. Kinda a bummer. Cylinder heads? Carbon? What's next on these babies?!

Vehicle is wifey's daily. Going to have to have her get on the thing more often.

Thanks for the response.

You're welcome. If it continues to be an issue, perhaps have the dealer check it out while still under warranty. Good luck.

Re: Studder/Skipping?

I experience the exact same issue with my almost new (2000 miles) Ecodiesel. Typically occurs with light throttle at about 55 mph. My Jeep was built in August, which is after the mentioned TSB.

Re: Studder/Skipping?

My shudder has finally gone away, but I know that it is only a temporary issue. Most of my driving is in the city with a bunch of stop lights and not much highway driving. I tend to take it for a little spin about once a week to open it up a bit.

I'm already slated to get a new CAT and other items and this repair is only a matter of time.

Depending upon the number of issues this winter, I may just trade it in for a new vehicle. I wanted this vehicle to last for many years, but the reliability of this engine and the engineering involved in the vehicle is sub-standard for a $50K+ purchase.

The second post has a PDF that you can download with the TSB described.

Re: Studder/Skipping?

This is exactly what mine was doing. Took the dealer 47 days to do the repair job, but we had a few issues. The heads were caked on with carbon dust and crud and had to be replaced. FYI - the repair procedure stinks and is not complete. Most dealers don't even know how to do it, so make some calls to find one with a diesel tech if you can.

That being said, it has ran perfect since the repair. Search TSB 009-006-15 for some other threads on this forum and others about this. I even posted pictures of my engine torn apart. I imagine this is at least $6,000 repair job if you are out of warranty, so be prepared.

I hope this isn't something I have to do every 20k miles but the new heads supposedly have a slightly modified design to prevent build up. Just another example of Jeep rushing out a product that wasn't ready for prime time and asking all of us to beta test it. But hey, I got 2 payments knocked off and a lifetime warranty for my 47-day saga, so at least they seem to have admitted it!

How did you get this lifetime warranty? I only have 20k miles so I was planning on taking it in after I rack up some more.

Well when one's Jeep is in the shop for 47 days for the 11th trip to the dealer for other various warranty work (P20EE being just one and this being another), I think they people at corporate took pity on me. I did give them quite an earful too and bashing them on social media and everything else I could think of. Wasn't expecting the warranty since I am leasing, and it probably isn't even needed. But it gives me some peace of mind if I do decide to keep it and hey, if they are offering, I'll take it.
