Loved the GC and the EcoDiesel. Just needed to bring more "stuff" with me.
The GC gave me 14k of pretty much trouble free miles (1 recall, 1 round of flashes).
Found a new 2014 Ram, 4x4 crew Laramie, EcoDiesel with 498 miles. All the equivalent features as my Limited GC with light group, pano roof, tow package.
$41,506!!
Couldn't pass it up.
Of course, though, my reliability luck ran out. 15 miles in, CEL = P245B (EGR performance). Took it in this morning, defective EGR valve.
Dealer fortunately found a replacement that will be overnighted. Should have my truck back tomorrow CoB. Fingers crossed. Hauling the fam and boat down to the lake for 2 weeks.
Congrats. My GC is for my wife to drive. I (we) couldn't survive without a truck in the family for even a single day. So I'm patiently waiting for the Canyon diesel to be available to replace my '09 Canyon that has 153K trouble free miles now.
Had the Ram been available in the diesel I would have purchased it rather than my Jeep because of the reasons you cited. The Ram is a home run but so is the Jeep in my mind.
I have had the Ram as a rental and friends that have the Ram 1500 non diesel and I like it a lot. My Jeep is outstanding looking to do my 3rd oil change in 2 weeks, fuel filter, air filter and rotate tires. Solid 28-29 mpg...
Congratulations
@scottg918514, congrats on such a nice rig! When my JGC was in the shop once they gave me an Enterprise rental of a 1500 - gas engine. I must say that the tranny's dial on the dash was, at first, a little odd for me to get used to, but after a day I got used to it and I really appreciated that it removed the "clutter" from the center console of the JGC's shift lever. Enjoy your 1500 CRD!
that's a great deal and I've thought about switching too. my understanding is Ram ecodiesel are $10k more for the extra capability. how does it drive in comparison?
Just to offer some clarification, the code P245B indicates an issue with the vacuum diaphragm that actuates the EGR cooler bypass.
It's located on the EGR valve/cooler assembly at the rear where the hot side pipe connects to the turbocharger.
Most often the issue is with the vacuum line that has come disconnected. The next most often issue is the plastic housing has gotten damaged. The last cause could be a seized EGR cooler bypass shaft, which will involve a much more lengthy repair.
I now have one of each, a 14 GC, and a 15 ram eco diesel... Each has it's uses. GC is for trail exploring, plan for the ram is towing. So far, I'd say the ram engine tuning runs smoother, and doesn't seem to have the same off-idle lag like the GC.
I went the opposite direction - had 1/2 trucks to haul my gear and tow. But didn't have the money to have it only as a 3rd vehicle so had to drive it like a car 90% of the time. Hated parking it and my wife hated driving it as she was worried of hitting people or other cars. Found the WK diesel as a replacement which can do what my v8 pickups can do for almost 99% of what I needed it for. I also bought a small open trailer (have a mid size enclosed v nose trailer) for use as a truck bed (haul wheels and make big box store runs). Now we can use it as a daily driver and not worry about parking in the City (parallel) or lots (no 3-4 point turns in narrow lots / garages).
