Surprised they didn't use Frigi-Fresh on the intake, or for slightly more severe cases Frigi-Clean.

BG Products, Inc.

For more severe cases of sweat socks syndrome, a drain hole at the bottom of the AC is needed, then it is filled with a cleansing foam and let set to kill all mold/mildew, etc.

On some ACs you get get to the innards of the unit from along the sides so you can
really get a good blast of cleaner in there.

Frigi-Fresh works great on home air conditioners as well.

Re: That smell ...

It may have something to do with the Urea/DEF system.

We have 1500+ miles on ours now and the wife made a comment about this today. Makes sense that it's coming from the engine compartment as the air intake for the HVAC system is between the hood and windshield.

Just shy of 1000 miles and I notice the "burnt plastic" smell every few days. Will this eventually go away or will it need to be fixed?

They are investigating the issue to see what needs to be done. Had some discussions with a few people about this as I know from experience that these engines do not smell after 300 miles.
urea has a very mild odor but when heated, it turns to ammonia, which smells just like cat piss.

not sure what OAT coolant reacting to certain compounds in sulfur cured hoses smells like. apparently, it's quite foul.

Re: That smell ...

What I don't understand is that all diesels that use urea basically use the mercedes system which is licenced for free. Yet I have never heard diesel mercedes owner, vw owner, porsche, BMW mentioned their vehicle smell like pee. Is there a flaw in the jeep design? Has anyone complained to jeep...

Re: That smell ...

975 miles and cat pee smell is of and on (mostly at slowing down or going slow) since 500 miles. Comes from the vents. Had that burning sticker smell first 150 miles but that was something burning off, one can tell. Dealer made me promise to come in for a 1000 mile check and I will mention...
I don't think this smell has anything to do with the SCR/urea system.

Has anyone noticed any actual cats following the vehicle down the street?

Too bad Jeep didn't offer the Mercedes puff of perfume in the cabin option.

Re: That smell ...

I too had that smell, very evident when I collected the car from the dealer. My feeling was that it was from the front left wheel well, so I have been washing the wheel well when I am washing the car and the smell seems to have gone away after a few weeks. I live Down Under so no UREA for me.

Re: That smell ...

I thinking we are talking about two completely different smells.

Urea, aka cat piss

Not having this problem, and although I've never owned a cat I have had the unfortunate experience of catching a whiff of a dirty litter box. Definitely not what I was smelling.

Exhaust

Smells like exhaust fumes coming through the hvac vents. Per my previous posts, happens in some stop and go traffic. Has happened 3 times now, but those times were pretty bad, eyes watering, headache, had to crack a window, etc.

I was in to have some work done on Saturday and spoke to my service adviser, him and a couple of other advisers all said to put the hvac into re-circulation mode when I'm in bumper to bumper traffic and that this was common with the wk2. I really find that hard to believe, I've been in plenty of cars in bumper to bumper traffic and have never experienced anything like that.

Re: That smell ...

Willx had posted a while back that there is a smell that is from the coolant and the lines coming thru the firewall. He said Chrysler is aware of the smell, and is working on it. Have not heard anything since then.
