*Too Lean* code, they can't figure out why. Any experience with this issue?

Guys I have a 2014 GC Eco-D and it ran fine but had a CIL come on. The dealer says the code reads *engine too lean* but they can find nothing wrong with the vehicle.

They are placing monitoring equipment on the vehicle and going to drive it around to try and see if the code comes back on (2x it happended to me). Has anyone seen this particular problem before?

They gave me a nice loaner so honestly they can keep the thing for 6 months for all I care, I enjoy putting wear and tear on a loaner instead.

Thanks

I had this problem right after I had my Cat replaced. They couldn't figure it out either but they ended up saying they cleaned mass air flow sensor and found O-ring rolled on intake air tube which *could* cause an air leak and lean code. Not sure if that's all B.S. or not... It came back once since that service visit but went away before I could bring it back in.

Yeah, I figured they just came up with some explanation to get me on my way. I'm done with that dealership anyway and hopefully this Jeep as I'm going through the lemon law process now. Also, the Jeep resolution team is useless and they don't seem to resolve anything.

If you had the P0174 code (IIRC) like I had recently....here's the story:

On the initial code, the dealer simply reflashed the PCM and brought it up to date. A few days later, CEL again appeared and I went back to the dealer...turns out it generated the same error code again despite the updated PCM software.

On the second visit, the tech checked all the obvious issues...fuel flow through the injectors, induction leaks, and the O2 sensor. No issues found. The dealer opened a STAR case with Chrysler to resolve. Engineers told the dealer to replace all the fuel injectors and fuel lines...which they did although the parts had to be ordered (and showed up in three business days).

Car was at the dealer for about 10 days total...but Chrysler did provide a loaner car through Enterprise when I needed one.

Apparently it did solve the problem although I did get another CEL...but it occurred on a Friday so I just kept driving the vehicle since I detected no change in performance. Thankfully, it went away a few days later on its own but have no idea why the vehicle generated a code.

Hope this helps.

Leaking Charge air cooler at the O-ring apparently was the cause. The engine has a mass air flow sensor and if too much air passes by it, compared to the fuel injected, it shows a lean code.

This O-ring seems to be a problem area on these engines. Probably a very simple fix if you know to go right to it. It was really tough for them to figure out and I had a loaner for 8 days and 900 miles.

I'll take your word for it, but I'd think that if the intercooler was leaking, high pressure air would *escape* and then too much fuel would be injected, leading to poor combustion and essentially a Too Rich condition. You have a pic or a link to the O-ring in question?

I think it's my fuel additive which makes me feel like a real S**t head. They never asked and I never thought to mention.

The dealer never could figure out this problem. I had not added my fuel additive in about 2 tanks when the dealer had the vehicle. They cleared the code and drove it a lot. They checked everything and the vehicle was fine.

I got home figuring the problem was behind us, and added my additive and the code came back on within 25 minutes. This isn't really a Mopar problem, as much is it's an EPA problem related to sensor over-sensititivity. We have continued to drive the vehicle with the code on. The vehicle is quiet, smooth, powerful, and gets phenomenol MPG. In fact they reprogrammed it and it holds the higher gears longer and I'm averaging over 26 mpg all in town.

I'm going to get the GDE tune as it rids the vehicle of nuisance codes such as this when some sensor is just reading a tiny hair out of range.
