Re: Towed the boat ran hot uphill

Since I bought this Jeep to be a tow vehicle, my biggest complaint about this engine is the fact that it runs so damn hot when towing.

While the engine may not mind that the coolant is hot, it does mind when the lube oil overheats - and the oil cooler on this engine is woefully inadequate.

While it's rated towing capacity is much higher, I have run into overheating issues towing a 4900# Airstream. Two examples:

Climbing a pass in the Sierra, the water temp was right at redline when I pulled over and got out for a few minutes to take some pictures. When I started back up, I was in limp mode for about a quarter mile... [I know I should have let the engine cool before turning it off, but I don't remember seeing any warnings on the EVIC.]

Climbing another long grade in the Sierra, my oil temp got up to 254 degrees and I got an EVIC warning that the vehicle was about to go into limp mode due to high oil temp (it never got above 254 and didn't enter limp mode.)

Since the oil is cooled by the engine coolant (instead of a separate radiator), I find the fact that the engine coolant tends to run hot while towing to be a a major design flaw, not a feature...

Re: Towed the boat ran hot uphill

I'd second that notion on looking into some Purple Ice by Royal Purple and then consider a 60/40 water to coolant ratio if you need more.

Re: Towed the boat ran hot uphill

Half Deaf,

Was this before or after the GDE tune????

I've towed up some very steep grades (AZ, NM and CO) with our Travel Trailer and have seen the oil temp reach 255 but haven't seen anything to do with limp mode appear on the EVIC. FYI - The Flash Point of Pennzoil 5w30 is 460F......

Also, I don't use ECO when towing and if it is a steep grade, I'll keep the RPM's up around 3400 using the paddles. Never an issue with mine wih over 14000 miles towing.

Re: Towed the boat ran hot uphill

Just to add another data point, at the health club today a fellow 2014 ecodiesel owner told me he had a warning message of an impending limp mode due to high oil temperature. His coolant temp was high, but not yet in the red zone. He slowed down, but the Jeep almost immediately went into limp mode. He pulled off the road, shut off the engine, let it cool for 30 minutes, and restarted the engine. He said it sounded terrible so he shut it down and had it towed to the dealership in town. They checked the coolant, the oil, and scanned for any codes (there were none). They couldn't find anything wrong with the Jeep. He was towing a 19' trailer up a slight grade with an OAT of around 85 degrees.

Re: Towed the boat ran hot uphill

EGR leaks can cause problems like this.... can be hard to track down too.

254 degree oil is not high temperature. Synthetic oil such as Mobile 1 does not start to break down until over 450 degrees. Highly doubt Jeep set limp mode at 254 degrees.
Been to Corvette racing school outside of Las Vegas few times. During our track time you saw 325 degree oil temps all day long on stock Z06's. Some of cars had over 10,000 miles of just track use, without any motor problems.

Re: Towed the boat ran hot uphill

My BMW 2007 with twin turbos is designed to run 245F oil temp. It isn't the high oil temps that bother me it is the seal material used. BMW didn't upgrade seal materials until we started seeing failures and leaks which was around the 50k mile mark. I hope FCA learned from BMWs mistake to upgrade to higher temp seals or we will all be seeing these issues.
New turbo engines are designed to run hot for emissions so seeing the temps hit 270F is no big deal...

Hmm good point. I add it to my street cars but didn't put it in my CRD as temps never get that hot.

Looking at Water Wetter it notes it is compatible with Dexcool which is also an OA based coolant (similar to OAT). Same also noted with Purple Ice.

Found some info on water wetter from previous posts by BMW guys: Redline Water Wetter MSDS - In case you wanted to know

Re: Towed the boat ran hot uphill

I might be wrong about the warning temperature (it may be 264 degrees), but I did receive an EVIC warning.

The time it actually went into limp mode was before I added the GDE Hot Tune, the EVIC warning came after it was installed.

I normally tow in Sport Mode and in mountain driving aggressively use the paddle shifters to control both the engine rpms and vehicle speed. (The Hot Tune is a must-have for towing; both for the engine braking and the somewhat better fuel economy).

On a recent trip I went over six mountain passes without issue. The water temp gauge went just to redline, and oil temps stayed in the lower 250s on the longer/steeper grades.

If the engine doesn't mind the higher coolant temperatures, that's fine - I still think the oil cooler design is poor if it can't adequately keep the oil cool when the coolant temp rises...
