Towing Mileage

I just got back from a trip to Sedona. We disperse camped four nights and did a little off-roading without the trailer. Coming home, we filled up in Sedona, drove up through Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff and jumped on I-40 for the return to Taos. A decent tailwind picked up about half way back, but became a quartering wind from the NE as we drove from ABQ to Taos. Pulling a 2500 lb. off-road trailer that's built like a box, we got 19 mpg for the trip home. I was very happy. Got about 18.3 on the way over.

Re: Towing Mileage

Nice. I towed my 31ft Travel Trailer, probably around 6500 lbs, from Utah to Mt. Rushmore and back, round trip of 2000 miles and averaged 13 mpgs. That's with all the wind through WY.

Re: Towing Mileage

These Jeeps are great for towing.

I'm averaging 16.5 to 18 towing a 4900 lb Airstream. Got my overall best and worst mileages in the same day: 23 mpg from Crater Lake to Medford, OR (basically all down hill) and 15.5 between Medford and Weed, CA (up & over the Siskiyous).

I'm looking at getting the GDE Tune to add engine braking for the mountains. Wish the cooling system was a little more robust, though...

You can switch from a 50/50 mix of water / coolant to a 65/35 mix pretty safely with out risk of freezing unless where you live you get well below 0 for sustained periods of time. Then add a bottle of water wetter and it will make a big difference. You should see a decline from max by about 20-25 degrees doing this.

Thanks for the info. I thought about changing the coolant solution but forgot about water wetter. I've used it before in older vehicles but it never crossed my mind now.

Re: Towing Mileage

Towing from Minnesota to Missouri and back with a 5000 lb boat, with 4 adult passengers and luggage in the Jeep, I averaged around 18 mph round trip last summer.

How long is your as? Any issues with the trailer swinging the go around due to the short(er) wheelbase compared to a pickup?

Thx!

Any issues with trailer sway? We're looking at trailers in the 25-30' length, seems most feel that would be to long for the go wheelbase..

Thx!

Mine is a 19 ft Bambi, and with an equalizer hitch there is no sway at all. I bought this GC planning on eventually up-sizing to a 23 ft AS; I'm guessing it would handle up to a 25 footer with no problems as long as you use an equalizer hitch...

It handled the trailer no problem. With heavy winds you will feel the trailer, so you will need to adjust speed to help. I never traveled over 65MPH to begin with since most travel trailer tires are only rated for 65MPH.

Re: Towing Mileage

Our Jeeps also have an integrated trailer sway control.

Don't be fooled into complacency by that. The integrated trailer sway control software will sense the trailer sway after it has likely already gone too far and started to scare you witless. You need a sway control or sway prevention hitch to prevent the sway or control it before the tow vehicle knows it's happening. And all the integrated trailer sway control software can do is engage braking on the tow vehicle, not on the trailer, which is likely where you actually need it once a sway event is underway.
