Re: Towing MPG's

2014 JGC Laredo 2WD V6 gas. Just finished 793 mile trip from sea level to 5,000 feet in Yosemite National Park for five nights of camping and back home to sea level, mpg = 16.2 (this according to in dash trip/mpg numbers). I'm happy with that. This mpg while towing our new 19 ft. travel trailer at approx. 3,500 lbs dry weight plus probably another 200 lbs. of food, clothes, and other stuff. I was conservative and kept the speed between 55 and 60 mph, (according to CA CHP the maximum speed for vehicles towing trailers is 55 mph). Jeep did an excellent job of towing. We have no regrets in our decision to buy a Jeep GC with V6 engine. Too bad the price of gasoline is jumping up over $4.00 a gallon so quickly. Probably won't be towing our home away from home as much as we'd like.
Will post picture of Jeep and trailer soon.

Re: Towing MPG's

Just completed (6/14/2014) a 705 mile round trip towing my 3500 - 4000 lb. travel trailer (3500 lb. trailer weight plus our stuff). Went from sea level to 7600 feet in Sierra mountains. Jeep is a 2014 V6 Laredo w/factory tow package. Averaged 14.9 mpg and we bucked winds coming and going. I think the miles per gallon are good.

The ultimate tow vehicle.

Overland diesel/tow package/self leveling air suspension.

Tech package/lane warning.

Keep it in sport and simply paddle downshift as necessary.

Re: Towing MPG's

Just back from a 3450 mile trip from the Midwest to Maine and back.. Most was interstate running 65 to 70 (mostly closer to 70) pulling a Lance 1575 trailer which weighs close to 3500 lbs. Got 15 mpg on the entire trip. The trip back was into very strong winds almost the entire way.. At those speeds with that kind of wind, I was getting half that mileage with my 09 4Runner with a V8. I was very happy with the mileage and even happier with how it pulled, even on the hills..

Re: Towing MPG's

I had to borrow a friends ML350 Bluetec for a tow trip when my '08 Silvy 1500 5.3 v8 pickup had a wheel bearing go bad right before a race. Going the same speed towing with the same trailer the MB easily bested my v8 1500 silvy's best mpg on that route by over 50% (it got an astonishing 17.2 mpg round trip versus my best of 8.8 mpg in the Silvy) and the MB pulled up the steep hills and into headwinds without all high RPM the Silvy needed to maintain speed. Soon after I turned in that truck (was a lease) I looked for one but then found a gem of a WK CRD (for $10k less than a comparable mileage MB) but it had the same engine and bought one of those. Now I'm sporting the WK2 ED and loving getting low 30's mpg highway normal driving.

These are the testimonials that the penny pinchers can't wrap their heads around! Keep 'em coming.

Thumbs up Re: Towing MPG's

Did a 1000 mile trip a couple of weeks ago pulling a 19' Airstream Bambi (~4900# fully loaded & wet) with my 3.0; also had a RocketBox and BasketCase on the roof:
First leg (mostly flat and interstate) 18.0
Second leg (400' elev. to 7600' to 4600' and back) 16.2
Return leg home (mix of 2 lane and interstate) 16.6

Best I ever got with my old TV (2000 JGC w/4.7L gasser) 8 to 9

Makes me a "Happy Camper"!

From what I've seen, said penny pinchers readily concede that the CRDs are good for towing. What gets me is that many of them believe that's the extent of their usefulness.

Re: Towing MPG's

Long road trips at constant speeds.....you can't beat the VM diesel motor !

To paraphrase Dick Popeil, "Set it and forget it"..........and at highway speeds get an easy 25-30mpg" !

Re: Towing MPG's

Halfdeaf, did you experience higher engine temps climbing from 400 to 7600 feet?
