Towing MPG's

Looking at upgrading to a 2014 overland diesel. I currently have a '13 overland HEMI, but the gas mileage while towing is pretty brutal. I tow a 21' fish/ski style boat that weighs around 3,000lbs altogether.

I currently get about 10-12mpg depending on wind, incline, etc. What kind of mpg's are you guys getting towing with the diesel? Need some numbers to justify the purchase to the wife.

I was looking for the same info about 2 months ago. I found a couple of the Aussies who are each getting about 18 mpg towing around 4500-4800 lb travel trailers ("caravans" to them). And a guy here got 19 mpg towing his 6600 lb Airstream. All 3 with diesels.

I would have guessed that your boat would be reasonably aerodynamic. What speed do you usually drive at to get the 10-12 mpg? Wind resistance is a bigger factor than weight, and wind resistance increases exponentially as speed increases.

Wind resistance (drag) is the mpg killer. An Airstream is a much better design than most other TTs. Hopefully your boat isn't much taller on the trailer than the roofline of a GC. If you are towing with elevation changes, the work required to "lift" the load over the hills is a factor as well.

Also, it has been calculated that under normal driving conditions the EcoDiesel has a 36k mile payback vs the Hemi. Towing would shorten that. The harder the tow, the more savings.

Hopefully we'll see some more data on this during the summer months. My 08 CRD does 16-18mpg depending on the variables towing an open car trailer with a total load of around 5500lbs.

I'll be replacing it with a new diesel in the next year sometime and would be great to know what to expect.

Thanks for the response. I would say I get 10-12mpg around 70-75mph. It is definitely aerodynamic. If I can get close to 20mpg towing I would be very happy.

even more so the 4500 option for the diesel over the v6, which has good mileage comparatively when not towing. Short travel distances and colder climates not withstanding.

Long story short, we were the victim in a car accident a few months ago and don't want to keep the car anymore. The drivers insurance paid for the repairs of course, but I just don't want a 1yr old car that's been in an accident. (For the right price, hopefully someone will)

That sparked the whole new car idea. Still waiting to see how all this pans out, but should find out in the next few weeks..

I think if you factor the up front cost for the diesel you also have to consider the expected life of the engine which in my view is much greater than a gas engine.

I know you will get better mileage than the gas engine but I think the ride will be so much more enjoyable because of the torque that for that reason alone I would absolutely justify going with the diesel. If you live where it is flat everywhere you go maybe that is not the case but he in NE PA where you are constantly up and down hills more torque is the way to go.

The v6 isn't in this comparison. He has a v8 and isn't willing to give up the torque and towing capabilities. Towing a heavy boat at 75mph with hills will make the v6 downshift and scream in agony!...and mpg will plummet from the high revs.

3K is heavy? We also dont know his location or how often he tows. I referenced the v6, because that is included in the base msrp. Just pointing out there is a tremendous amount of up front cash to be spent, to save a small amount at the pump when all things considered, ie higher diesel fuel prices, etc.

I wish him well with whatever he chooses, but 3K isnt a lot of weight.

Maybe the OP will chime in as to why he chose the Hemi the first time. He isn't considering the v6. 3k isn't heavy on flat ground but in my post I mentioned pulling an incline. At that point the drag from the incline is significant. That may or may not be the OP's situation. I just mentioned it as a comparison...and it is an accurate assessment of what a smaller engine will do when worked hard.
