Towing, what drive mode?

In the warmer months, I'll be towing a boat, about 5000#.

The question, esp. with a diesel, is should I tow in Normal drive mode or sport. And if Sport, should I manual shift?

I'm guessing with a diesel, u want to keep the revs low.

Also, even after reading manual, sport mode is a little unclear to me. If in manual shift mode, does it downshift automatically if u slow down or stop?

Re: Towing, what drive mode?

I like using sport because I don't want my level trailer being adjusted by QuadraLift - keeps constant ride height in sport

Re: Towing, what drive mode?

Well, don't have QuadraLift, just regular auto-leveling suspension

Towing, what drive mode?

In that case - I'd just turn Eco off

I tow with mine quite a bit - I only manually shift to avoid braking on down grades

I tow about 2-2.5 tonnes, and just let the box do it's thing. It hasn't missed a beat.

Re: Towing, what drive mode?

I put it in D, turn off the Eco, and hit the go pedal! The jeep tows the boat (5500lbs) surprisingly well, while getting 15-16 MPG.

Re: Towing, what drive mode?

Revs are healthy for a hard working diesel. If you get on a long steep grade, revs in the 2.2k to 3k range help keep temperatures in check. Despite popular belief, under full load (max weight or steep grades), lower RPMs aren't ideal. Towing 5k, I'd use sport which moves shift points slightly higher. At max weight, I'd use sport mode and paddle shifters on big grades to hold a lower gear.

Re: Towing, what drive mode?

Pulling a 4900# TT, I'm usually in Sport mode unless traveling on a long, flat four-lane.

The paddle shifters are invaluable on winding roads in the mountains; I just wish the diesel had better engine braking...

Re: Towing, what drive mode?

It would be nice if an aftermarket program company could make an exhaust brake like my Duramax. The programmer uses the variable geometry turbo to create back pressure for engine braking.

My tow setup. Pulling boat out to winterized. Towing in sport, jeep pulls like a train.

Only issue is any road bump resonates thru cabin with a load clunk.

I'll check tightness of receiver, but suspecting the difference with body on frame vs. unibody.

Re: Towing, what drive mode?

Hmmm, been reading thread about rearend clunk in '11 models with tow package and self-leveling shocks.

Sounds like it still might be an issue. Some on the thread had regular shocks installed to "fix" the issue.

Anyone else towing with '14 models hearing the "clunk"?

Re: Towing, what drive mode?

Correction, Jeep fine. Brake coupler on trailer is very loud, clunking. Didn't notice as much in my Yukon, greased it up, hopeful that helps.
