Trailer hitch requitements

Hi Guys. I need to know your experiences towing a light trailer. We are about to pick up a tear drop trailer that weighs 1700lbs. Loaded maybe 2100lbs. The salesman is trying to convince us that a weight distributing (WD) hitch with spring bars is required ($800.00)to have a good towing experience. I know a WD distributes the weight across the trailer and tow vehicle. The owners manual says anything over 5000lbs should have a WD hitch which makes sense.
For those of you who tow light trailers can you please weigh in. I think our class 4 hitch will be fine for this light tow. But do you guys recommend the WD hitch even for this light weight. Do you have any sway problems with towing with a standard hitch.
Mike

Do you know the tongue weight? That is a important to know before making any decisions on a WDH.

Birtch Boy: I will try to find the tongue weight. The spec's at the dealership does not list that. I'm thinking it can't be much over 200lbs. But I will check. Mike

What's the make and model? Most will have the information online. Have you looked at your manual? Mine ('13 Hemi) says that any trailer over 3,500lbs requires a WDH. I can't imagine that yours will.

Birch, I have a diesel and it says anything over 5000lbs for the WD hitch.

Re: Trailer hitch requitements

Then I'd tell the salesman to pound sand. He's just trying to pad his bottom line and commission. Give it a try and see how it handles. If you can feel that trailer swaying at all, looking into an anti-sway setup or something similar.

Re: Trailer hitch requitements

The only reason I can think of for getting a wdh, is that with the capability your Jeep has, you may be in a position to use it in the future . For now it might be overkill.

Re: Trailer hitch requitements

Don't bother with a 250lb tongue weight......WDH's are only required on trailers OVER 3500lbs!

We tow a 5500lb travel trailer and have a WDH with anti-sway. Remember your JGC has an anti-sway system built in.

Believe me, your JGC won't notice that Teardrop on the back !

Re: Trailer hitch requitements

I just towed a golf cart on an open 12' trailer 300mi at 75mph yesterday. At NO point did I feel a need for sway control or trailer brakes on this high wind drag 2250lbs load.

Thanks AMR. By the way that is one heavy golfcart. I assume that weight included the trailer. MIke

Trailer hitch requitements

Yes. I don't think towing the golf cart without the trailer at 75mph would have been a winning idea..so the extra 1300lbs for the trailer seemed like the way to go :-)

Towed it 300mi back yesterday and road like a champ.
