Truck Trend's Long-Term Test, 2014 EcoDiesel Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland

Truck Trend just completed their long-term test of a 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland EcoDiesel. For 23,864 miles they averaged 22.59 mpg. This is almost identical to what I reported last week - for 20,198 miles I got 22.314 MPG. We must have similar driving styles.
(My report was posted here: Fuel Log Book: 20,000 Miles, 22.314 MPG Overall (Hand Calculated))

Here are the Truck Trend report links, including their experience with the cat replacement (in Update 4).

Thanks for sharing this. With only 1700 miles on mine, it is good to read what is in store.

Re: Truck Trend's Long-Term Test, 2014 EcoDiesel Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland

interesting. I have always seen my MPG in the 25.5-26 per tank range over the course of 18900 miles. The last 1000 with GDE tune has increased it to 29 per tank.

it could be related to weight. I don't have quadralift system nor offroad package. just a limited with luxury group II.

Yes I would agree weight is a factor. I added rockrails to mine = est. 200 lbs and I expect a small decrease.

Agree about the weight. I wonder if there are any here who own a 2WD Diesel GC, and what their mileage is.

Thanks echo7. Enjoyed the read. I certainly agree that the air suspension needs more engineering but besides that I have not found any complaints in my 15 with 3,800 miles.

Re: Truck Trend's Long-Term Test, 2014 EcoDiesel Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland

I have almost 26,000 miles now and my average has been for the last 9,000 miles 28 mpg. They must drive pretty aggressively to pull the mileage as low as what they got. I can't comment on the off road harshness because never took it off road so far.
I am very pleased with my ride sounds like the testers were too.

I agree about the air suspension. At the highest setting it is a rough ride, and bumps come with a loud Boom! sound. But while it's not overly refined, it does give me extra clearance for obstacles, and I'm driving slowly anyway.

Excellent MPGs there. Is yours 2WD or 4WD?

The article mentions the lack of a tow/haul mode for the transmission. Is that the case with the '14 and newer that as the tow package?

I have a 2WD JGC EcoDiesel currently 37k miles, I'd have to agree with that review.

The numbers I'm seeing 27mpg calculated average
Last tank was 638 miles
27.7 mpg, DIC was about the same.

Driving usual suburban 45-55mph highways, stop light to stop light.

Far as driving interstate, I've had it up to 38mpg average driving in near freezing ambient driving from Chicago to Toledo, cruising 60mph, no traffic, no passengers.

I've done the same trip to Toledo going 75mph, 500lbs of passengers and gear and averaged 28mpg.

Recently went from Chippewa Falls, WI to Chicago, 85F degree ambient, 1000lbs of passengers and gear, 32mpg, (DIC and Calculated); 750 miles on the tank, range said I had 60 miles available.

So maybe someday I can do 800 miles on a tank. Exciting!

Yes that would be exciting! If you do, please report and share it.

I've reported (here: Eco Diesel Mileage) that on the freeway and being light on the gas pedal I was able to get the following MPGs.

Quote:
25 MPG at a steady-state 85 MPH
28 MPG at a steady-state 75 MPH
34 MPG at a steady-state 65 MPH
45 MPG at a steady-state 55 MPH
I want to do that, 30-40mpg, for a full tank. On a future road trip, I'll try it. If my patience can bear it.
