Re: Upgraded tires on 20 inch wheels

I went with the Nokian WRG3 SUV tires due to them being an all weather tire with the winter rating , and I couldn't be happier with them. They handle great in all weather and of course they are not an AT tire which is ok as I don't do that much off-road with the jeep. Those forterra are just outright crap that I couldn't wait to get rid of , even though I didn't have them on that long with being a used jeep when I got it. They rode terrible on dry roads , horrible on wet and even worse with snow.

Re: Upgraded tires on 20 inch wheels

I actually have found the Goodyears to be good tires. I have almost 39K on mine they will easily run to 45K before the wear bars. They are a good price for 144 each plus shipping. However the Defenders are a great tire. I had the Pirelli tires before too and liked them however had huge out of round problems with them requiring tire shaving.
I am pretty good at judging tires and I have owned multiple M3's with mostly Michelin Pilot Sports and other brands. I guess I must be lucky with my Goodyears as they seem very good tires.
Is the 272 dollars worth buying the Defenders?
That is my decision point right now. I need to do this in the next few months and I think the Defenders are superior so maybe the extra money is worth it...

Re: Upgraded tires on 20 inch wheels

I ditched the HP's early like 20k 'course I was looking to upgrade to a 20" wheel. Went with the Yokohama Parada's on sale at tirerack.com for $151/ea. I got a light wheel and tire so my mileage didn't suffer. I did look at the Pirelli's but there were too many bad reviews as I remember.

While I prob won't buy them again, the Fortera's for the price, are not a bad choice if you do mostly highway, dry driving. I've seen them as low as 129.00 each. But if you live in any wilder climate or want to extract all the jeeps capabilities, there certainly are better choices...
Other than wearing pretty quickly,I've had no real problems with them and I've seen other much more expensive tires wear just as fast....

Re: Upgraded tires on 20 inch wheels

I got the Michelin Defender LTX on mine in the 265/50/20 stock size. Had them put on by Dunn Tire (same price as Costco but they could get them the next day). I've got 9k on them and they are fantastic. I need to have them rebalanced, I had them installed before winter and I feel like Dunn rushed the install process and didn't balance them well. I have a slight shake in the wheel at 72-75, that I only noticed after I rotated the tires.

It's also possible due to the extreme snow in Syracuse, NY it's possible i knocked off a stick on weight when cleaning the excess snow out of the inside of the wheels.

In closing, the LTX Defender is the only tire I recommend for any Light Truck/SUV. It's totally worth the price and from the M/S2's I had on my Denali. They wear like iron, excellent in the snow, and are quiet.

Before the GC I had 3 Audi A6 Quattros and VW 4 motion vehicles but not an SUV, the new tires remind me what a good 4x4 coupled with proper tires can do. The Fortera's demanded a certain amount of caution in the wet, (OK a lot) the Pirellis offer so much more, serious wet grip. I put up with the Goodyears for 34,800 miles but now I really wish I had not.

The downside is my fuel mileage might slip a bit, I can power away in the wet where before the grip was gone in a split second. The Jeep just feels so much more secure and planted on these tires.

Funnily enough my local Goodyear installers work great with Tire Rack and having had a bunch of tires fitted there they do a perfect job and I have never had an issue with balance or anything.

If you are looking for a sport oriented all season tire I recommend these.
If you purchase a brand new Grand you won't have to switch the tires as the Pirelli's are now an OEM tire option on the higher trim levels.

Yeah I put the g2's on mine, the 20's in stock size. I like them, not great on ice (but not much are short of winter tires), not overly noisy with decent grip.

Re: Upgraded tires on 20 inch wheels

My Fortera's have 36k on them and I'm just gonna run them out this summer. I run dedicated snow tires in the winter so won't have to actually replace the summer tires until next April. I'll probably switch to Bridgestone Dueler H/L's in the V- speed rating. The S-rated version was OE on my Yukon Denali and they were great, lasted 50K miles even towing my 6500# race car trailer every summer. I replaced them with the V-rated version and they were great too. Far better in the wet than the Forteras.

Just as the OP, I just made the switch to the Pirelli Verde and the first thing I noticed was the lack of road noise. Granted the Forteras had 42k on them but it's a totally different ride. I've been playing with the air pressure, I set a cold temp at 34psi, it increases to 37-38 while riding
