Upgraded tires on 20 inch wheels

My GC runs on 20" wheels which came with the Goodyear Fortera tires. After 35,000 miles I decided it was time to change, they still had some life left but I figured I had my value out of them. I hated the wet grip and performance of the Goodyears but I liked the quiet ride and comfort . Handling seemed OK in the dry but I had nothing to compare to.

Occasionally in the wet they were scary.

After reading all the tire rack research I decided on the Pirrelli Scorpions Verde all seasons. There are 2 versions available a H and V rated tire. I went with the V which for some reason is a couple of dollars less, offers a higher performance rating and an excellent 740 wear rating.

My priority, in South Florida, is towards summer performance with some boat towing and occasional trips to the mountains. The Pirrelli's seemed perfect and the price was good with a $60 rebate thrown in.

They have been on the Jeep for just over a week and so far so good. They are super quiet and the handling feels good. I am waiting for rain to check the main gripe I had with the Fortera's.

I think just about anything would be an upgrade over the factory GoodYears, especially for wet pavement, they suck.

Possibly even tireshop bought Goodyears of same model would better. post a pic of how they look!

Re: Upgraded tires on 20 inch wheels

As a FYI I got a mailer in the mail yesterday that tires are buy 3 get one free at my local jeep dealership... Is this really factual and a good deal? Could you buy them now and have them installed in like 6 months ( if you didn't need them right now?) if this is a good deal?
What brands do they handle? any that anybody would want?

Yes its one of the best deals out there on tires. It truely is get one free and the other 3 are not marked up to make up for it. i had a quote worked up from my dealer it could not be beat anywhere i looked. I doubt they would let you defer install for 6 months but they run these buy 3 get one free deals at the dealers all the time this is nothing new and you dont need a mailer to buy them. They run that deal fairly frequently just keep an eye on your dealer coupons on line.

No issues with the Defender, quiet and smooth. Sounds like he needs to get them balanced.

After 1600 miles, I still love my Defenders...quiet, smooth, straight tracking, handle hard cornering good, awesome in the snow, and enough of an open tread to handle mild off-roading. Combine all that with an 800 treadwear rating and both traction & temp of A, and you have a near perfect SUV tire.

Good to hear, those will probably be my next. The thing that attracts me to those is they are a good on road cruiser but the tread is rugged enough for mild -semi medium off road without going to an AT tire and loosing road manors. Few tires in that category for this size infact i cant think of any others off hand.

I like these tour HPs i have on it now but they are wearing so fast they are going to be toast at 25-30k. I dont need a tire to last 70k miles but id at least like to get 40-50k out of them.

Re: Upgraded tires on 20 inch wheels

We have had a lot of rain in South Florida since last week and I have put a few miles on the Pirrelli tires. I have also had the chance to have some high speed highway runs. I am thinking my next vehicle will be another GC and if it is the first thing I will do is switch the tires. Before the GC I had 3 Audi A6 Quattros and VW 4 motion vehicles but not an SUV, the new tires remind me what a good 4x4 coupled with proper tires can do. The Fortera's demanded a certain amount of caution in the wet, (OK a lot) the Pirellis offer so much more, serious wet grip. I put up with the Goodyears for 34,800 miles but now I really wish I had not.

The downside is my fuel mileage might slip a bit, I can power away in the wet where before the grip was gone in a split second. The Jeep just feels so much more secure and planted on these tires.

Funnily enough my local Goodyear installers work great with Tire Rack and having had a bunch of tires fitted there they do a perfect job and I have never had an issue with balance or anything.

If you are looking for a sport oriented all season tire I recommend these.
