Vulnerable DEF injector wiring!

Well, the bug letter was one step up from mine, which didn't even acknowledge that there was a problem.

I took Willx's advice and spoke to my dealer when I came in for an oil change. The service advisor looked under the vehicle with me, saw the low-hanging injector harness, and opened a STAR. Hopefully, enough of these will be opened to get Chrysler's attention.

Re: Vulnerable DEF injector wiring!

About 3 weeks ago, I received a request from Jeep to fill in an online questionnaire about my new Overland Diesel. They asked for my opinions and concerns, likes and dislikes on all aspects of the buying experience and the vehicle itself . I mentioned my concerns about the exposed DEF injector and wiring several times.

However, I haven't heard anything back yet LOL !!!

Re: Vulnerable DEF injector wiring!

Anybody know first hand what the line that carries the DEF from the tank to the injector is made of?

I had the Incompatible DEF warning come on, took it in, and the dealer shop is saying it has a kinked supply line. I have no choice but to go with it, but I'm skeptical - why would it kink at 7500 miles spontaneously? And why would that give me the Incompatible DEF warning? We haven't had it off road at all yet, and this CEL came on after we had just driven a 650 mile road trip and after I put fresh Peak BlueDEF in it. Anyway, was curious what the line is made of, just to see how likely it is that it might kink on it's own.

Re: Vulnerable DEF injector wiring!

It depends on just how "fresh" that Peak DEF was mate. If it was fresh off the shelf, that means little, it is the date of manufacture and how it was stored that counts.

Other's on the forum experienced "old" def and the same CEL issue as yours. There is a sensor for "bad" DEF, so it sounds like your dealer may not have a lot of experience with the DPF/DEF system on our Diesel Jeeps.

I do not doubt for one second that they have zero experience with it. They said they haven't even had one in for an oil change. I'm just hoping their diesel tech has some ability to think on his own and trouble shoot.

I have learned how to check manufacture date of the Peak BlueDEF by decoding the number/alpha numeric stamped on the bottle. Unless it was stored continuously at over 100-degrees F since the date of manufacture it should be good. I'm fully expecting that the CEL for a DEF problem will come on on my way home or in the next day or two..... Trying to be optimistic, hard to not be skeptical.

Re: Vulnerable DEF injector wiring!

FYI...I got an SCR related code (P20EE) on mine a week ago and reset it immediately. It didn't come back.

Re: Vulnerable DEF injector wiring!

My DEF injector broke off my jeep (5600 miles on it) one morning going on two weeks ago. Took it to the dealership to get it checked out. I was told that since it had broken off that warranty would not cover it, but if it would have had a crack in it, then it would have been covered. Started a claim through Chrysler, they checked into it and told me that the same thing. Going to cost me $550 for repair. There is definitely an issue here that needs to be taken care of. My concern now is how long will it be before this happens again???? I do not plan on taking my jeep on trails or to do any "major" off-roading, but i am a hunter and need to be able to drive across fields and don't want to have to worry about a cornstalk hitting the injector or wires and breaking something. I am starting to wish that i would have stayed with a truck instead of going with this jeep

Re: Vulnerable DEF injector wiring!

Why not purchase the skid from Dom42 in his next batch or have something made up by a fab shop? No vehicle is ever perfect the first year of production that just a fact. I'm happy Jeep pushed to get the Diesel on the market as fast as they could. $185 bucks and 30 min of my time is nothing on a 40K+ vehicle plus it's a lost less money than the DEF injector replacement as you noted.

Vulnerable DEF injector wiring!

It took me 10 minutes to install Dom42's DEF injector skid plate. I am making a slight adjustment to it so it fits perfectly

This is absolutely ridiculous. I would insist on having this fixed under warranty. The part did not break from normal "wear and tear", and the vehicle was not used in a way that would void the warranty. It is not your fault that the whole DEF subsystem was designed on this vehicle as an afterthought and the injector and feed lines are super vulnerable and not protected.

Mine completely broke off after going through some standing water at 45 MPH. I didn't put 2&2 together until much later because it was about 15 miles later that I got a message on the EVIC that there was a problem. The dealer replaced it under warranty. Good luck.
