weight distributing hitch for towing?

Hello All, I am moving up to a larger boat and have been looking into weight distributing hitch set ups. I just wondered what others are using that are towing over the 3500# threshold. I need one compatible with surge brakes.

Re: weight distributing hitch for towing?

I use an Equal-i-zer hitch and it works great towing a 4900# Airstream. It's heavy (a chain-type WDH might be lighter), but it adds a lot of stability to the hookup.

We went with the Andersen. Easy to install plus you don't have to worry about different weight bars if you go up or down trailer weights

Re: weight distributing hitch for towing?

No need for WDH until 5000 lbs. I tow a 4800 lb boat with no WDH and have no issues.

A WDH will defeat your surge brake, you'll need electric or hydraulic-over-electric brakes to be effective.

Re: weight distributing hitch for towing?

Which ones are compatible with surge brakes used on a boat trailer? Most weight-distributing hitches can only be used with electric trailer brakes.

Re: weight distributing hitch for towing?

Shannon,

FYI - The Jeep Owners Manuals on page 520 states that a WDH is mandatory if towing over 3500lbs. We tow a 4800lb TT and the change in handling is quite noticeable if you don't have a WDH!

I know that the Andersen is not compatible with certain Atwood couplers, so here is the installation instructions. I would also call Andersen direct and ascertain if there will be no issues with your boat trailer and surge brakes.

Re: weight distributing hitch for towing?

Thanks for the replies, boat is about 4700# dry and trailer is 1500#, so figure about 6700 with batteries, tower etc. There are several that are compatible with surge brakes, but some may reduce actuator movement which I am trying to avoid. I am trying to figure out if the chain style or friction style works better, I have had recommendations for both.
