Sport mode is addictive... I love that it lowers you into aero and keeps you there and the difference in feel while driving is significant.

Of course, my average mileage is down to 22 mpg....

Hi Guys messaging you all the way from Australia...picked up car yesterday..black on black diesel but low and behold has to go back Friday as they hadn't done the update or the recall which to me was pretty ridiculous as they should have done before delivering me the car.... with regards to mileage or as we call it kms...I have done a quarter of a tank already and 200kms/125miles is that normal or should it be more...im not thrashing the car but I thought I would have got more kms out of a quarter of a tank...also sunroof has a rattle, have heard others have same problem is there a fix for this???

thanks

I'm not sure what update or recall you are referring to. Can you elaborate? I had to install the latest Uconnect update, but it took me less time to do it myself than to take it back to the dealer.

Depends on what kind of driving you are doing, and remember that it will take 10,000 or more miles for this engine to really break in. On my trip home from the dealer, which is mostly urban freeway, I got 29.5mpg. That would be 180 miles on 1/4 tank. However, on my local driving around home where I rarely go above 45mph, I'm now getting 23mpg. 1/4 of a tank at 23 mpg is 140 miles. If you are getting the EPA 21mpg in city driving that is 128 miles on a 1/4 tank. So the answer is, it depends...

Just got my new plates. I was amused and intrigued to see that my randomly-generated license plate was 7CRD869. CRD right there!

My plan was to move my personalized plate from the Explorer to the Jeep, but I'm half-tempted to keep these plates. Probably won't, but I still thought it was cool ...

acilate - I'm guessing yours will also be a 7CRD plate. Gonna keep it?

One of the things I've noticed on my new GC is the lower interior door panels are plastic and very easily scratched and scuffed. They already had scuff marks before I ever got in. The problem is just that it is hard to keep from kicking them with shoes when getting in and out. Any thoughts on some kind of protection for this area? Grandma's plastic couch covers? Maybe some kind of stick on carpet or something?

FYI, The SiriusXM free trial we get with our new JGC's includes SiriusXM Internet Radio, so don't miss using it to listen to SiriusXM over the Internet. Once the year is over, renewal of whatever we have now as trial will cost over $265/yr

#551 ·
I always just let mine expire and wait for them to call. I normally have to tell them that it's too expensive and get off the phone. The next call works out to be about $10/mo. Tell them that you refuse to allow automatic renewal to avoid the price going through the roof.

Wash, rinse, and repeat yearly.

I do really enjoy having it on road trips, although the ubiquity of good 4G connections is reducing my need for Sirius.

No it's not. The vehicle cell radio is low bandwidth 3g radio. It will work ok for low consumption web usage like yelp or bing, but when you talk streaming it will not work. For Pandora you need what Uconnect calls "Via Mobile" which is basically an app on your phone that lets Uconnect feed off your high-bandwidth 4g phone for streaming (and obviously clocking your data plan).
I just get Pandora, iHeart or whatever through my phone and use the bluetooth connection to play it through the car radio. No extra cost above what I already pay for my phone's data plan. You don't get the apps and traffic on Uconnect, but that is ok with me.
The complete package with everything Sirius offers direct from them is less than that making for a fairly thin business plan. Something doesn't jive. I just called Jeep again and they state the car will use the on board data connection for the on board apps and says Sprint is the data provider. They said the via phone allows you to use your phone instead of their plan if you don't wish to sign up. I tried to check this myself on my test drive but the car did not have any apps already downloaded and wouldn't let me download without signing up.

As to 3G I typically see between 1 to 3.5 downstream which while weak for HD video is more than enough for Pandora. Many areas around here don't have 4G and are not even on any (published) road maps as to when it might be coming but people use it just fine as they did before 4G ever fooled out anywhere.

To be clear I'm in no way saying anyone is right or wrong but I have to date not seen anyone post that they attempted this without a connected phone to prove it out one way or another.

@vtail I used my phone to stream Pandora to the radio as well as listening to mp3s to test the stereo. Twice, because I at first was going to get the Overland but then decided I wanted to hear the summit to see if it was worth the upgrade. I'm a long way from expert but am tech aware. In my case I hover right at the limit of my data plan so unlimited use of the car data will mean not only upgrading my data plan but also the bosses who is in the same boat. IF the car will use the onboard data for 20 a month I'm ahead of the game.

The only onboard apps that you can currently get/buy at the uConnect store are: uConnect Access, WiFi hotspot, and the Bing app that automatically comes with the uConnect access. The Via Mobile is advertised all over the manuals but is not available in the app store yet nor are any additional apps..

If you do sign up for the $20 per month WiFi hotspot to save yourself the data usage on your cell plan, I wonder if you also have to be signed up for the $20 per month uConnect Access fee that starts after the first year.

Pandora has been working fine for me (iPhone). Automatically starts playing when I start the car and is fully controllable from UConnect and steering wheel. It would not work when plugged into the USB, so I've been charging with the cord plugged into the back seat and the phone inside the center console (nice little slot to run the cord through). The first time it automatically starting playing from iTunes. Paused iTunes via the phone, opened and hit play on Pandora, no issues since.

#571 ·
Had to run out to the dentist... got a couple cracked silver fillings replaced and can't feel my face right now... So I tried Pandora on iphone over the bluetooth connection, worked great. Plugged into USB and it first started playing my playlist and then stopped all music. Hit play on Pandora on the iphone and it picked up on unconnect and started playing fine. Just have to learn the quirks I guess.

I was talking with the wife on the drive back to the office and uconnect dropped the phone from bluetooth...? "No phone paired" When I stopped I pulled out my phone and turned off bluetooth and then turned it back on and it connected right up.

First time so I will write it off... remember, 'Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. The third time it's enemy action'

I wouldn't want to be the developer for Uconnect's bluetooth connection service. While there are supposedly standards in place, every phone manufacturer implements them slightly differently, even between models of the same phone company there can be slight differences. It virtually guarantees problems from time to time if it is working at all.

Stupid question, does anyone know of a key fob cover that they like? I started my Jeep by accident at work today. Must have bumped the button twice by accident while it was in my pocket. This is my first new vehicle in years and never had one that would start remotely before. This could be very bad if it started by accident in my garage.

Given that we don't need to use the key fob that often anyway, I wonder if there is a cover that prevents accidentally pushing the buttons while in a pocket.

I set off the alarm twice today. Once apparently after I had walked into the bank. Someone came in and said a maroon SUV had the alarm going off. Then I couldn't turn it off. Pressed and pressed buttons on the key fob and after a couple minutes it finally quit. Not sure exactly how it turned on as the fob was in my inside coat pocket. I wonder if someone touched the door handle or something? The weird thing was I was able to open the car, start it, shut it off, get out, lock the car, and the alarm just kept going. Then later today I had the fob in my front pants pocket, leaned against the rear bumper when the tailgate was open and set it off again. Pressed the panic button and it turned off. Guess I better read that section of the manual again...

Did anyone go through a DPF regen already? This evening, driving back home on the freeway, the SFU had a slight change of behavior. Although in ECO mode, the jeep kept itself mostly in 7th or even 6th gear (usually cruising on 8th), with a higher than typical RPM. I had a slight smell of very hot metallic coating even while seating inside the cabin. The smell was stronger when I parked in my garage. This is not the "cat piss" smell. When I finally shut down the engine you could hear click-click-click noises of a contracting very hot metal coming from the undercarriage. I just passed 400mi on the odometer, so I'm assuming this is an active regen.

#595 ·
Willx had a regen cycle. When it happens, you will have a red ring around the speedometer, and somewhere - not sure if it is EVIC or Uconnect screen, it will say regen in process - drive at highway speeds.

So I was heading to the gym tonight when the car in front of me slammed on his brakes because some idiot ran out in traffic. Of course the alert and brakes kicked in from the FCW which was cool but he was quite a ways in front of me and I never felt like I was in danger of hitting him. Right now it's set as default, which I believe was the Far setting but I'm wondering if I should move this up a notch. For those that have had it go off, did you think it was a little premature or just right? I guess I was more worried about the guy behind me than the one in front in this instance but also wouldn't want to leave so little room that it could cause a pileup if I was to get rear-ended.

Interested to hear others experiences and whether it was set to Far or Near and if you felt that was plenty of time to react?

Haven't had the experience myself, yet, but I recall reading in an earlier post where someone had it set to near (I think there are only two settings, near or far) and the near setting didn't leave much room or reaction time, so they set it back to far.

#590 ·
Two things:

Climate control - is there any way to set the default temperature to another setting? When in auto mode mine defaults to 21C at each start up, not the last cabin temperature set.

Block Heater- anyone given any thought to where they will run the cord? High? Low? I'm trying to determine best configuration so as not to have cord get gummed up in the engine somewhere.

#592 ·
About the block heater cord. I did not put it in my order (trying to add it). I cannot tell from the photos if it is simply connected to terminals in or near the power distribution box. Is it trivial to install if the cord is obtained?

#597 ·
The outlet end of the preinstalled cord is tied to itself just behind the power distribution box.

Was discussed in earlier thread that the block heater is on all CRDs, so all you are paying for is for the cord to be connected. I do not remember it getting beyond guessing as to whether you could install a cord later on as a DYI or even if a dealer could do it. A call to your dealer might confirm. However, this is so new I wonder if they will know.

Seriously doubt it is just a cord addition. On the engine block heaters I have had they go into a freeze plug and then routed out to the engine compartment area. If they do put the block heater in without a cord that would be excellent saving 85 bucks.
On the Forward Collision System I have learned at least for the way I drive to use the shortest setting (1 bar) to not activate premature braking. Also you can expect when people pull in front of you where you begin to brake just in case that the system will take over. Also when someone is turning ahead or you left or right and doing it slowly it will brake. You cna tell you are fine but the object has been detected and the system will brake. All of these system whether electro-optical or RF work the same regarding the algorithm used for braking.
Wonderful system and my experience it is always on just in case we are not attentive.
Hope this helps some...

FYI, it is just a cord, all the diesels have the engine block heater already installed. This was confirmed a few months back when ordering started by the good folks at JNAP.

As for the FCW, I was actually talking about the forward collision warning, not the adaptive cruise. I just thought it was funny that it kicked in like it did when I didn't feel there was ever any danger. I was thinking about changing to near but reading SJandL's recent adventures I guess I'll leave it alone for now and just keep an eye on it.

As far as the adaptive cruise, I finally got to use that today on my drive into work and it was flawless. I like the readout in the bottom right corner that show what you have it set at and the speed, very useful. Will take some time getting use to it slowing down and realizing I was actually going faster then the guy in front of me so I need to move over and pick up the pace again :)

One last thing, not a fan of eco mode so far. Seems you have to mash the gas to get it to go and then a couple seconds later it catches up with second gear and boy do she go then. Will have to get use to it but right now I drive more with it off when in town and my MPG's are showing. Still just under 200 and sitting about 20.7MPG from delivery. Guessing that will go up quite a bit as some of it has been idling time.

Got this on key fob jackets/covers. I sent them a picture of my key fob, so hopefully this is the correct item number. I think I'll order one or two, they're pretty cheap:::
Kirk, Please see item ddga76... Yes, it will greatly reduce accidental engagement of the control functions...
Thank You,

They've got lots of colors, even a camouflage. Think I'll order two, one "deep cherry red pearl coat" and the camo.

I'm not sure those will save us from the false positive triggers folks are getting. They look like simple protective push through case.

can anyone point me in the right direction, I noticed some trim missing? When I was drying the SFU off I noticed this. Anyone know a part number?
I'd take it to the closest dealer for warranty repair.

I had a chance to try some of the Uconnect functions after I registered, like the Fuel Price finder. Unfortunately, it only lists gasoline prices, not diesel. What would be helpful is to show where I can find diesel. Even better would be to show the cetane ratings, but that would be asking too much. Where do we submit change requests to the Uconnect gods to make this a useful feature for us oilers?

Just in case this helps someone else ...

I filled up my DEF last night (because dealer didn't do it). Based on the gauge (about 1/3) and one or two other reports, I figured it would take 2 2.5gal jugs so picked them up at O'Rielly. Interestingly, while both were supposed to have the funnel/tube - it turned out only one did, so I had to switch it from one bottle to the other. No big deal, though I'm curious how/why the 2nd jug didn't have it.

Anyway, a little over half-way through the first jug, it stopped filling. I thought that was odd, so stopped and went to check the EVIC - it showed about 50% full, so I went back and tried filling more. Emptied the rest of the first jug no problem. Checked the EVIC and it was about 2/3 so figured the 2nd jug should be just right to finish it off.

Half-way through the 2nd jug, it again stopped filling. Based on my previous experience, I decided to stop just briefly and start again. Started filling again and shortly after, the urea started overflowing so I stopped. I went back to the EVIC and it showed less than 100% so I waited a couple minutes and started filling again. The rest of the jug emptied no problem.

So, it seems, at least based on my first experience, that you need to periodically give it a chance to settle all the way into the tank. FWIW I didn't feel like I was filling "too fast" and the included funnel/tube has a built-in air vent.

Anyway, that was my experience.

#616 ·
Yeah I still don't know what to think.

I picked it up showing about 80%.

2 days later it was showing 0% on some starts, and 100% on some starts. The diesel tech at the dealer said that "if they sit in storage part full for a few months (mine did between build and delivery) the sensors get crystallized and need the DEF to slosh around for awhile to get them clean."

I bought 2, 2.5gal jugs at Autozone on the way home. It took about 1gal to fill it all the way up (until it came out of the top).

For the next day or 2 it kept showing 0% or 100%, then started staying at 100%.

I've driven about 500miles since I filled it up, and it's at about 80% on the gauge and holding there now.

Officially took delivery of my Cashmere Pearl Summit SFU!

Fit and finish => flawless!
Only 1 minor scuff on interior that dealer will fix next week.

Pictures are from last night after PDI

Thanks everyone for all the info, and special thanks to Milous, Wiilx, Temerarius, Shannon and Vtail. Great job JNAP team, you build a beautiful unicorn!

Did you go brown or black interior? I saw one of these yesterday and told my guy I would be willing to give this and the brown a go over the red/brown summit I was looking for up to then. I'm a little worried that the interior fake metal trim stuff might clash with the exterior color?

While reorganizing the JGC I noticed two spots where the paint was a bit different. Really evident under the fluorescent light but hardly noticeable outside where I did the inspection. Posted some pics, will be taking it to the dealer tomorrow.

Was driving home tonight and a big warning popped up on the Unconnect screen: Vehicle Phone Requires Service, Contact Dealer. Then after a few seconds it disappeared. Anybody know what that might be all about? I registered the Uconnect system a day or two ago and that seems to be working.

Vtail,
My Limited (9/28 build) has the same affliction. I call it the VPRS message. It occurred with both software versions: 13.33.7 and 13.38.52. I get the message upon startup and typically several times a day. The message is more a nuisance as most radio functions seem to work. However, there are a few minor quirks that I have noticed:

1. The media selection defaults to USB after a restart even though there is nothing in the USB port. It should default to last media used, which is SD card in my case.
2. The radio phone screen does not clear to previous screen after outgoing calls. It does however clear to previous screen after incoming calls.
3. If I set NAV to alert for speed 14 miles over limit, within a day, it drops to 13 mph. I have reset to 15 to see if it will reset itself to 14.

The quirks may not be related to the card issue, but I bring them up as matter of comparison to what other users may be experiencing. I know that there are at least a couple more postings where the same quirks are reported

According to Willx, the VPRS problem is the 3G phone card located in the head unit. If the problem persists, the radio will likely require replacement. I had mine looked at by the dealer this week to get on record of the issue. The dealer must go through the BS routine of hearing complaints first and try software fixes before a replacement can be considered. Whether they replace it is entirely up to Chrysler and dealers do not (or cannot) keep new radios on hand. Apparently, there is still a shortage of radios, which are being somewhat allocated to dealers. I was told that early Cherokees have issues too, so that doesn't help the supply.

Check your software version, try a couple more upgrade reloads, if VPRS persist after a couple of weeks, get it by the dealer as the wait for parts could be lengthy. I posted earlier notes in the Uconnect 8.4 North America thread (WK2-Audio/visual/Navigation), so I will post future comments and updates there.

Welcome to the VPRS club.

Sorry to hear you are both getting the same message. So far (knock on wood) I have not gotten the message. Keep us posted on what they wind up doing for the fix.

#630 · (Edited)
You know this is an extremely complicated system. I don't know of many like it and I can certainly understand teething problems which will happen since every possible configuration and interface device can't be tested. Standard protocols for interface along with various configurations of phones-SD cards-USB keep their systems integration lab hopping.
I am very excited to have all this capability and hope that with some software/firmware ups it will be all sorted out.
Hearing these issues helps me to prepare for my JGC which I am ordering tomorrow...

Just got the paper copies of the owners manuals delivered. 4 Total. One owners manual, one warranty book, one U connect book, and one diesel supplement. Huge stack of books. Just for fun, I measured them. Combined, they are 2⅜" thick. I don't even think war and peace was that thick. Looks like another long read (not really, as I already read them online, I just want them in the Jeep for reverence, if the Jeep has issues)
