Re: What color should my oil be?

I read about the air filter problem and replaced the OEM one with an afe dry permanent filter. Much sturdier housing than stock.

"Sticking to the computer" is contingent upon it having the latest firmware TSB, or at least a version from 2014+. My computer oil life indicator spuriously plunged to 3% at 4,200 miles on the 2013 factory firmware version.

However, barring that I suggest just trusting the computer given the several UOA's published on this subforum so far. My oil had a TBN of 4.5 at first change @ 4,200 miles. Subsequent UOAs from other users who have gone farther before changing (7,000 miles, 7,500 miles) also show plenty of life remaining.

10,000 miles between changes seems very plausible while remaining within a safety margin. I'm going to change when the computer algorithm suggests and I will have a followup UOA. I fully expect to have a good UOA result for the 10,000 mile oil.

Re: What color should my oil be?

So let me see if I can decipher the "TLA's":-

UOA = Used Oil Analysis?

TBN = I haven't got a clue. Care to enlighten me?

Re: What color should my oil be?

I appreciate the lengths some of you go to assure that your machine is in perfect operating condition. Many of you are skilled mechanics at various levels of competence. I, however, am an apartment kid from Queens and while I can do some basic stuff, I'm probably not going to ask my mechanic to have my Jeep pee in a cup. I will defer to the sensibilities of the computer for my maintenance periods. If something goes wrong I have a nice long warranty to take care of it.

Again, nothing against anyone who's more hands-on than me. Each to his own here, as in most things.

Right, I don't think that's necessary. Basically, from the data we have collected so far it appears that the current firmware is doing a good, conservative job estimating the oil change interval with a good safety margin remaining.

Basically, feel free to trust the computer oil life calculation on the Jeep. Not only will you be in good standing warranty wise, but your engine should be just fine as well.

Where you should be less trusting is ensuring that whoever changes your oil waits the mandated 30 minutes for the crankcase to drain, as per manufacturer instructions. You can imagine that this delay isn't popular for the dealer techs.
