What color should my oil be?

My 3 month old '14 WK2 3.0 has all of 3600 miles on it. When fueling up today, I checked the oil and it was full but also as black as crude. I've never checked it before and I and this is my first experience owning a diesel vehicle. I've had on problems, anomalies or codes whatever (knocking on wood)!

Is this normal?

What color should my oil be?

I don't like it, but black is normal with diesels. My last diesel, a 1998 Mercedes E300 Turbo Diesel, always had black oil after driving <100 miles following an oil change with Mobil 1.

Agreed.
I've owned several Diesel engines over the last 30 years and the oil will turn black after as little as 100 miles.

Very true. My Cummins was really bad, but never ever had a problem with it. Just make sure you stay on top of your intervals and you'll be fine.

Re: What color should my oil be?

Thank you. As I said this is my first diesel so it was alarming to pull the dipstick and see black oil on a 3500 mile motor.

There as been a lot of opinion strewn around this and other forums regarding oil change intervals for this 3.0L diesel. Some have recommended not going past 5K regardless of what the oil life indicator says. Others say to stick to the computer no matter what.

Any one of you experienced diesel owners want to chime in with a thought on oil changes for this motor??

What color should my oil be?

We have a few diesels. 2002 ford f350 w/ 250,000, 2010 gmc Denali hd with 110,000 and a dodge sprinter with 80k. They all go 10k on an oil change. Never had a prob. The gmc has a def system. Usually get 10-12k per tank. The new dodge pro van says 15k per oil change.

Re: What color should my oil be?

The computer won't tell you if you have dirt getting into the engine. This vehicle has a known bad air filter from the factory. Bad filter...means dirt in the engine. If you're not checking the engine oil, I'm sure you haven't looked at the air filter. You should check oil once a week if you drive it every day. I'm changing oil & filter at 5,000 miles. Also good idea to send in a sample. It's just like getting your blood checked. These engines are expensive to replace.

Re: What color should my oil be?

So, who do you send your oil/blood sample to? I'm in a holding mode for my 2015 GC Limited and am curious about the oil and filter change.

Re: What color should my oil be?

I will send in a sample or two down the road. I don't want to do it now while I'm still breaking in the engine. It's going to be full of metals. I will after 10,000 miles or so.

Re: What color should my oil be?

Diesel engines are my daily life. The oil will always change color thats its job removing and carrying impurities from both the diesel and wearing metals. Soot and carbon for one changes the color of the oil. This by no means suggests the oil needs changing. Stress less and Let the oil and filters do there jobs.
