I see some are doing the Mopar, Mahle, and AFE oil filters. What seems to be the best quality filter? I have a 14 ED about do an oil change. Also are you guys running the new oil spec, or the old? Amsoil, Penzoil, Mobil one, or Mopar? A lot of options.
On my 2014 ED I changed to the new Rotella T6 spec and now use Ecogard X10232 filters. I contacted EcoGard directly and they sent me their full filter specs, which are actually better than the stock MoPar filters:thumbsup:!
I've used the AFE oil filters from South Korea in the past; I try not to buy Chinese filters whenever I otherwise can. If you can, make sure you get the new CK-4 spec Shell Rotella T6 that should have came out last December, and not the old stock CJ-4 variant. Should be a little better than the previous spec.
I'm using aFe oil filters and Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30. FCA has said repeatedly that it's fine. My personal belief is that they made the change to unify stock and prevent idiots at dealerships from using the wrong spec oil, which happened frequently with the old spec. My UOA have come back fine and I'll continue testing at each oil change.
My local Walmart has CK-4 Rotella T6 5w-40 on the shelf, today. Around $22 for a 1g/4qt jug (8.1 qts in Jeep EcoDiesel.) Home Depot supposedly carries it now, as well.
Any retailer who has replenished their inventory since December should have CK-4 available. CK-4 supersedes CJ-4, and eventually, you will no longer be able to buy anything that says CJ-4. Look for slightly newer labels for the CK-4 variants.
There is also a Mobil Delvac 1 5w40 that is CK-4 rated, and is what you could use on our EcoDiesel's, if you want. Valvoline will have one soon, but I don't know if WalMart will carry it.
Yeah, I checked online, nobody has it, then I drove to 3 stores (including WalMart) and none of them around here have the newer stuff. Gave up and bought Rotella CJ-4. Oh well. One oil change on CJ-4 probably won't kill my engine.
Been using the Pennzoil Euro L 5w30 up until now. Would still be using it if I hadn't checked back in here after a long hiatus.
I do think that the change to 40 weight oil is more of a standardization than improvement.
I have totally changed my opinion after spending a good deal of time researching diesel oils. The two main items that support reduced wear are zinc and Load Carrying Capacity/Film Strength in psi. The higher the psi the better the protection from metal to metal wear. Also enough zinc is better than too much zinc which can actually cause more wear.
Our Pennzoil Euro L is pretty good at pressure 115K psi vs say the Rotella T-6 at 66K psi. I looked over the numbers on diesel and car oils and many car oils have really high psi levels where as the diesel engines all seem to migrate to the 70-65K psi level. I suspect that the oil manufactures do this for a reason as they know their oils well.
I previously thought that the heavier weight oil helps protect the greater pressures created by the higher diesel compression. Unfortunately the data doesn't support this. I don't think we will ever get an answer to the reason for the change by FCA.
Most of the reported engine failures are spun main bearings which would sure point to oil as a possible cause but not after reading this research. Others have reported that VM QC is variable and that is the most likely cause. I don't know but it seems likely that a material issue of an assembly issue might be the cause.
All I know is I will stick with my supply of 5W30 until exhausted since the Pennzoil is pretty good stuff. The new CK spec is an improvement in diesel oils but still lags behind some SM auto oils...
Well, isn't that rich. CK-4 supersedes CJ-4, so eventually (if not already on some store shelves,) you will no longer be able to buy CJ-4 oil. Or, in other words, Ford (and FCA) - you have no choice. (EPA pushed this.)
How does one tell which oil is the "best"? I tried (not very hard) to research it and all I got was Interwebz hyperbole. I don't know the applicable jargon so my Google-fu is weak.
In all honesty I think you could use Wal-mart Super Tech oil if it met the OEM specs and I bet you would be fine for years and years. Its prob bottled right beside Pennzoil or Quaker state !
Oil and how good it is, is really getting overblown on most all forums.....
Unless someone has used the others out there cut them open and done analysis there is no telling. I posted the generic filters I used cutting them open. Worked perfectly but that is a pure anecdotal evidence nothing to compare too.
Most of the drip in filters are manufactured in China or N Korea with some in Yugoslavia...
Yep ! wait till 11% off days and save even more... Menards is the cheapest place I've ever found for T6. I watch their sale ads like a hawk and load up when their are bargains !

If you could post a pic of the back of the bottle with the spec approval of MS 11106... I'm a believer. This is still appx 10.00 a qt oil no matter how it's packaged.
I've never seen Euro L that is FCA EcoD approved sold in 5 Qt jugs.....or at Wal Mart.....But I could be wrong...!

I think I did mention that I did check back a few days ago to see if they restocked the shelf (I purchased the last three bottles) and they did. I uploaded 3 files but I don't see them. I bought a 2.5gal jug of Shell Rotella 5w-40 at autozone since there was a sale+rebate and my own Mopar filter. Brought it down to dealer and had them do the change, cost me $20 for labor.
Hope they didnt dump the whole thing in the engine because it's only a 2gal/8qt system. Meaning that you should have 2qts/.5gal remaining. And if not they either over-filled your engine or kept the 2 extra qts for themselves and ripped you off.
