Re: What is the consensus on oil and filters now

Thanks guys. So the current oil requirements appear to be, basically, Rotella or equivalent.

Oil Requirements -- Source References
► Rotella® SAE 5W-40 Full Synthetic Engine Oil, or equivalent {as per the Jeep Service Bulletin # 18-003-17; see https://goo.gl/fXfGFd (in JG thread, https://goo.gl/na9UGd)}

Further:
► FCA Material Standard MS-10902, and
► API CJ-4 certified, and
► meet the requirements of FCA LLC.
(as per the Jeep Diesel Supplement pp 71-72: http://www.wk2jeeps.com/manuals/2016...diesel_3rd.pdf)

As a note, I bought my oil from my dealer last time, 10,000 miles ago, and they sold me the Pennzoil: Pennzoil Platinum Euro Full Synthetic 5W-40.

I bought a 2.5gal jug of Shell Rotella 5w-40 at autozone since there was a sale+rebate and my own Mopar filter. Brought it down to dealer and had them do the change, cost me $20 for labor.

Hope they didnt dump the whole thing in the engine because it's only a 2gal/8qt system. Meaning that you should have 2qts/.5gal remaining. And if not they either over-filled your engine or kept the 2 extra qts for themselves and ripped you off.

I still can't believe any dealer would let you bring your own parts and do it for 20.00. No dealer around here would do that.... That is a good dealer that will do that!

They aren't really doing a lot. You just lift it and let it drain into a resevoir they have and then just refill it.

And also change the filter - which is, to your point what they do with every oil change. The reason for the a steeper price I and probably others are expecting is that compared to other jobs, this one takes much longer on the lift as FCA requires to leave it draining (TSB requires at least 30 minutes). Time on the lift = time they can't service two other customers = $$$.

And why would you take a guy for 20.00 when you have 40.00 to 130.00 oil changes waiting in line? I could see it if they were dead slow and empty, but when have you ever seen that?
Again, it amazes me, and my dealer would never do that for sure... but hey good for you all !

I saw Menards and then saw you are in Wheaton. That's the only Menards I've been to in my entire life as there none that I know of in SoCal.

Dealer gave me 8 qts of CJ-4 Rotella and noted they changed the oil and I had 2 gallons of CJ-4 from Walmart already so it will be at least two years before I will be using CK-4.

The costs on Rotella are probably saving them $20 dollars per car at manufacturing and at least that or more during service. It may have simply been a financial decision and had nothing to do with "better."
