Wheel/Tire combo and MPG's

Have a 2014 Overland 3.0 and ran a winter wheel setup of Bridgestone Blizzaks mounted on stock 18" wheels off a GC Limited. In mixed city, towing, highway, my trip computer read 22.4 mpg over the winter. I just put the stock 20" wheels with Goodyear Fortera HL tires back on and am seeing an immediate increase of about 2 mpg in the same type of driving. I thought the difference was interesting - must be a combination of lighter summer set up with lower rolling resistance?

Re: Wheel/Tire combo and MPG's

Winter diesel blend will change a little bit. Are both sets of tires the same size/diameter? If not, the larger diameter tire will also throw off the odometer, giving a slight misreading. You will have traveled further than odometer shows, changing the mpg calculations both manually and on computer.

Re: Wheel/Tire combo and MPG's

Yes, same diameter tire (265/60/18 winters and 265/60/20 summers) - .3% difference -won't effect anything too much. Same tank of fuel, so that wasn't a factor, but interesting you mention it. When I first put the winter wheels on, I noticed my economy went down but attributed that to more city driving and winter fuel, but it was probably a combo of all of these factors. Fuel economy should keep going up once I take off my ski rack too!

I ran same set up but I had Goodyear AT tires for winter. I see a similar improvement. I also find that I like the look of the 18 wheels...same as yours...off of a Limited.

Re: Wheel/Tire combo and MPG's

I've run Blizzaks on every vehicle I've had in the garage for the past 15 years. On every one I've seen a drop of 2-3mpg. On the gas engine cars and suv's some of that is attributable to the winter blends, but even on the diesel it's 2 mpg. The tread of a snow tire is far more pliable so that's increased friction on the ground. Plus the rubber compound of a Blizzak is softer than an all season or summer tire, again more friction and heat.

I'll also note that when I went from the OE Forteras on my JGC to the Pirelli Scorpions, I saw a 1 mpg drop in fuel economy. But considering how vastly superior they are in all driving conditions to the Forteras, I'm ok with that.

Re: Wheel/Tire combo and MPG's

265/60/18 = 30.5" tire

265/60/20 = 32.5" tire

Aerochip, was that a typo on your part? was it a smaller ratio? Not sharpshooting but that will change the mileage

Re: Wheel/Tire combo and MPG's

Typo for sure - meant 265/50/20's for summer.
