Where did you install your break controller?

I have a Tekonsha P3 brake controller I bought for my drive across the country with a 16' V-noise trailer. (See this thread about my move across the country: http://www.jeepgarage.org/f222/is-this-a-bad-idea-96075.html ) I got the additional wiring harness so it's easy plug and play.

I'm not sure where I should mount it. Down low below the dash on the right? This seems like a good spot because you won't see the screw holes when I take it off and sell the trailer after I arrive on the west coast.

Alternatively, I could drill it near the fuel flap release button? This position seems slightly more convenient for messing with it while driving, I have no idea if I'll need to do this much. If I went with this position, could I just use 3M double-sided sticky tape so I don't have to make holes in the dash?

Where did you install yours?

I've used the Prodigy brake controllers for years- Prodigy, P2 and now P3. I have always mounted them above my right knee in all tow vehicles. I reset mine from around town to on the highway to account for the speed changes. And on long downhills if the trailer starts to sway I can hit just the trailer brakes using the slide bar on the bottom of the P3 to get the trailer back in line. So put it where it's most accessible if you should need it.

I would not trust double sided tape. Remember the controller relies on inertia inside to work, and in an accident if it comes loose you have no brakes, or worse it could think it needs to apply brakes when you don't want them on.

I have mine under the gas door button. However I used Velcro so I didn't have to use screws into the plastic. I towed a travel trailer all last year but now that my Jeep is on a boat to Italy, I was able to remove the brake controller very easy and hide it since I won't be doing much towing in Italy. It was a clean install and didn't leave any screw hole damages in the plastic.

IMHO, The best, and most unobtrusive, Brake controller is the DirecLink.

DirecLink Brake Controller - DirecLink.com

I ziptied the network computer module under the dash on the footbrake frame, which can be seen when you remove the footwell cover. I then use the supplied coiled telephone cord to connect the ECU to the control unit. Took me all of 15 minutes to install it.

I use the alternative mount to stick on the windshield just inside the A pillar and above the dash. This way the controller itself is right to hand and you can see all the functionality at, almost, eye level.

Alternative DirecLink Mount

When not in use, I remove the suction mount and controller and just stuff the telephone cord under the foot well cover.

No drilling, sticking, velcroing needed for any part of the system. I can heartily recommend the DirecLink system.

No association with the company, just a very satisfied customer.
