I have been looking at dealer inventories for about a 200+ mile radius of where I live in Northern California and there are lots of 2017 JGC's but no diesels. Are they on hold or something?

I believe production of the ED powered WK2s started October 13th if I remember correctly.

Thks for the update guys. So I assume the 8 sp paddle shift trans I see on the spec sheets for diesel powertrain is new. I guess that is good?? Where are these vehicles made? I assume the engines (and I guess the VF trans) come from Italy. Thks, Ed

The ZF designed transmission that bolts to the V6 is built by Chrysler, I believe in Ohio.

The ZF transmission that bolts to the Hemi is built by ZF South Carolina and sold to Chrysler.

I believe the new transmission will also come out of ZF in South Carolina.

VM makes the engine AFAIK in Italy.

My 2014 Overland, V8, had a ZF transmission which was built by ZF in Germany.

I spend time in both sides of the country. Not sure if it applies now but back in October 2014 when I was buying, there were almost no diesels to be found in NorCal markets. Kept checking as I traveled. As I came East and South heading back to FL more diesels were in inventory. Eventually bought in San Antonio after a deer forced my hand on I-10. Curiosity kept me checking in later months and it seemed NorCal dealers were just not stocking the oil burners like elsewhere.

The 8-spd paddle shift tranny was new a few years back, maybe 2014, maybe earlier. I'm talking USA here. It's been out since 2014, that I know.

The diesel is getting a new version. So for 2017 there will be 3 different 8 speeds in Grand Cherokees, depending on engine choice.

Just read an article in Autoweek today that only two 2017 diesels have been approved for production by the EPA, and that FCA wouldn't comment on a production date for its diesel. EPA scrutiny bogs down new diesels
Wow Kleyp, just read the article and it sounds scary. It is California's whacked out EPA that is driving this attack on diesels in the US -- I have read they have gone far beyond what is needed to keep the air clean and healthy which is typical as Calif tries to attack climate change for the entire world. Hopefully Fiat/Chrysler can find their way through the maze without messing up a fine engine. Ed

My dealer said he "never " orders diesels for stock units. Most buyers don't understand them + the higher initial costs = sits and doesn't sell. They also said they sell RAM ED 1500's about 4 to 1 over JGC diesels. Truck buyers know what they want, and diesel SUV buyers are a rarer breed....
